Description

Fiction. Mystery. Thriller. HTML:FBI Agent Atlee Pine's harrowing search for her long-lost sister Mercy reaches a boiling point in this breakneck thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci. For her entire life, FBI agent Atlee Pine has been searching for her twin sister, Mercy, who was abducted at the age of six and never seen again. Mercy's disappearance left behind a damaged family that later shattered beyond repair when Atlee's parents inexplicably abandoned her. Now, after a perilous investigation that nearly proved fatal, Atlee has finally discovered not only the reason behind her parents' abandonment and Mercy's kidnapping, but also the most promising breakthrough yet: proof that Mercy survived her abduction and then escaped her captors many years ago. Though Atlee is tantalizingly close to her family at last, the final leg of her long road to Mercy will be the most treacherous yet. Mercy left at least one dead body behind before fleeing her captors years before. Atlee has no idea if her sister is still alive, and if so, how she has been surviving all this time. When the truth is finally revealed, Atlee Pine will face the greatest danger yet, and it may well cost her everything.… (more)

I don't know what to say about this book, but I'll give it a whirl! However, DO NOT start this series with this book. Although it provides a lot of backstories, you will have lost something precious.

Astounding, riveting, violent, vicious, emotional, gratifying...I can come up with more, but why
Show More
bore you?

This was one of the best books I have read in quite a while. I assume (yes, I know what they say about assuming things!). However, I do hope that there may be at least one more book.

All of the other books in this series have been written using just Atlee's point of view; this book is written a bit differently by using Atlee's and Mercy's voice as well as another secondary/main character. It was a bit spooky, but I was quickly able to get into it. It was almost like getting three stories in one.

As I said, I don't know what I can say to get you to read this, but if you like Baldacci's works and have stuck with this series, then you HAVE to read this book to see how it all ends.

I liked this series so much that I have gone out to buy the two books I received as ARC.

*ARC provided by the publisher Grand Central Publishing, the author David Baldacci, and NetGalley. Thank-you.

Mercy (An Atlee Pine Thriller, 4), David Baldacci, author; Brittany Pressly, Kyf Brewer, narrators
As she searches for her twin, Jack Linebury, a very successful and wealthy businessman, helps Atlee Pine in her struggle to fill in many of the blank spaces in her life. In a complicated story

involving undercover agents and the Mafia, Atlee’s life was upended when she was only 6 years old. Her sister Mercy was abducted by Ito Vincenzo, and she was left for dead. The nursery rhyme, eeny meeny miny moe, was how Ito chose which twin to take and which one to try and murder. He did this to satisfy his brother Bruno’s need for revenge. Bruno had been betrayed by the agency that Julia was working undercover with, while still only a teen of 18. Bruno’s deal was ignored, and he went to prison.
Atlee’s mom was never the same after Atlee almost died and her sister disappeared. When in College, her mom abandoned her and disappeared, as well. Now, at 36, she was actively searching for her twin sister, and perhaps, her mother. She knows that her sister was kept prisoner and tortured by Desiree and Joe Atkins. Ito left Mercy with Wanda and Len Atkins, but they were too old to take of a child. They gave her to their son and daughter-in-law, who were childless. They were unfit and evil. None of them ever thought to contact the police about this supposedly rescued child from cruel parents who wanted to kill her. They claimed they were too afraid to get into trouble.
Atlee learns that the man she believed to be her father, Tim Pine, was wanted for the murder of Ito Vincenzo. Her mother had told her that her dad was dead. Now she learned that was a lie. Linebury is her biological father. His vast wealth will be hers but she claims not to want it. When he offers to help her by giving her his resources, cars, apartments and planes, to help her in her search for her twin, she refuses. Her assistant, Carol Blum, convinces her that it will make their job easier. As all these secrets are revealed, the mystery grows and the plot grows a bit too many arms. Is Mercy alive? Where is Julia, her mother? Where is her father, Tim? Why was her sister kidnapped. What was her mother involved in to so endanger the family?
Atlee learns that her sister’s name was Eloise Cain, no longer Rebecca Atkins. Atlee traces El’s footsteps and is relieved to discover that she is actually alive. El (Mercy), had been held prisoner and horribly tortured. After her escape from her captors, she lived a hardscrabble life, from hand to mouth, while learning to defend herself. She is like a lethal weapon. Her body is scarred, however, from her captivity, and her mind is as well. She is searching for those who held her prisoner. Mercy believes she is being sought by the FBI because she killed Joe Atkins, although she believes she left him alive. She is unaware that someone else, far more dangerous, is searching for her to avenge his brother Ken’s death. This powerful, prominent man, who is obsessed and quite mad, hires an assassin to kill her. Ken Buckley, his brother, was abusing a woman, Rosa, and Mercy beat him to the point of unconsciousness in order to rescue her. In the hospital, he suffered from a brain aneurism and died. Buckley’s family were radical religious zealots engaged in drug trafficking, sex trafficking and murder. He wants to avenge their deaths from the abuse they suffered at the hands of the FBI. What follows are kidnappings and bizarre violent behavior.
Is the conclusion realistic? Is it more like a fairytale? The women in the book are capable of great evil and great strength. They are portrayed as indomitable. They sometimes seem more like caricature, though, than real women. Almost every character could be bought for a price, as if all were inherently evil and all could justify their falls from grace with impunity.
In conclusion, the book is really chick lit, but it makes for a good mystery. Since all the loose ends seem to be tied up neatly, though, I wonder what could be next for the Pine twins.

Title: Mercy (An Atlee Pine Thriller #4)
Author: David Baldacci
Pages: 416
Year: 2021

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
The Atlee Pine novels are the most suspense-filled stories I have enjoyed in quite a spell. The series includes the following: A Long Road to Mercy, A

Minute to Midnight and Daylight before concluding with Mercy. We first meet FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine as she is assigned her duties, encompassing the Grand Canyon, investigating a missing person’s case in the A Long Road to Mercy. Atlee’s early life consisted of her receiving serious head trauma as her twin sister was kidnapped right from their bedroom in the middle of the night. The pain of that memory is further exacerbated by the rhyme the intruder used to decide which girl to kidnap, a well-known child’s rhyme, “eenie, meenie, miney, mo”!
Now, Atlee is a young woman who pushes herself to be the best agent she can be, solving crimes she is sent to investigate. However, it is hard for Atlee to move one day without thinking of her sister, Mercy, and the pain of being separated for thirty years, not knowing what ever happened to her twin. In this concluding story, readers get to see if Mercy is alive or not and where has she been. Lest one thinks that is all to the story, there is much more along with other investigations Atlee and her assistant Carol Blum must solve if they can.
In the exciting conclusion of this story, audiences find out if Atlee finds her mother and father. Have the past risks her mother took to bring down the mafia come after them but left Atlee alone? Also, in the novel we meet a vicious man whose long-term memory of past wrongs done to him, his family and others will cause Atlee to be in his crosshairs. Carol Blum is in real danger multiple times in the story, and it was gripping to see the lengths Atlee would go to find and rescue her. Her depth of love for Carol is very evident!
I hope this isn’t the last we see of the character Atlee Pine. Atlee is a strong, capable FBI Agent who has faced extremely tough times and people, yet she rises to the occasion to fight for justice! I think in the story we see a little more humanness of Atlee when she faces people wanting to do harm to those who are vulnerable. Atlee is one focused young lady who I think has a bright future, not just with the FBI, but with audiences, especially if she is teamed up with other well-loved characters from other Baldacci novels. Mercy was a rollercoaster ride that was constantly pulling me with each page I read! I hope audiences will consider reading the whole series from start to finish. It was very fun and exciting to bury oneself in the character and series! There is no teaser or hint of what might be penned from this author; all I know is I can’t wait to read whatever comes next!

FBI Agent Atlee Pine’s search for her twin sister Mercy, kidnapped 30 years ago when they were six years old, comes to a conclusion, with the help of her close associate Carol Blum.
While the hunt has been very difficult and dangerous, the conclusion is perhaps moreso.
David Baldacci fills in
Show More
what Marcy’s life had been like and the difficulties that causes the two sisters as Atlee tried to find her and as they try to move on from there.
The story also fills in many gaps in Altee’s life, things that had been hidden from her.
MERCY is not a stand alone book. While it can be read on its own, knowing the history makes a much better read.
A lot of twists and turns and very violent.

I was going to say that one of Baldacci's skills is to maker his characters believable, but I'm not sure they're really believable, just humanized and entertaining. A lot of flying around in corporate Jets in this story along with a lot of clever and surprising plotting.
It is the story of agent
Show More
Pines ongoing search for her parents and her twin. No spoilers except to say that J Edgar Hover may make an unnamed appearance in the story.

A thrilling end to the Atlee Pine series where we are fully introduced to Mercy, who ends up being an intriguing character. The twists and turns of the villains is well done and makes it a great read

Another Baldacci series that I am just getting too old for the more predictable and I believe, although I don't know where to find it, targeted at a much younger, less educated audience. The inclusion of a "rogue", so cliche, FBI agent is just not believable. The part about abduction and

imprisonment of children is believable and most likely very probable.

Mercy is a very difficult story to read. Child abduction, physical child abuse and brainwashing are more difficult to read about than murder. There were a lot of annoying Shakespearean near misses too. The story is unlike any of the other Baldacci books that I have read. So if you the possible

reader of this book, do not mind abuse to children, then this is the psychological thriller for you. If not, then you understand the three stars that were awarded to this book.

3.5 to 4 stars--closer to the 4 than to the 3. This appears to be the close to the Atlee Pine series. I feel like I want to know more about how Atlee and Mercy explore their sisterhood now that they've finally found each other. So who knows, maybe someday, sometime, Baldacci will let us know if
Show More
Mercy softens some on wanting to be a loner and engages with her family.

I also wonder if we'll see a series featuring Britt Specter (where Atlee and/or Mercy might make a guest appearance just as John Puller did in this series, giving us a glimpse into what they're doing "now".) I am curious if she will take Atlee's advice and reconsider her career choices.

When I reviewed "Daylight", I said that the Atlee Pine series was improving with each novel, and this one was definitely the best. It was a ripper! The plot was intense and action-packed, and the climax was explosive. Go girl power!!!!!

I also loved that Mercy finally made an appearance and was
Show More
allowed to tell her story. It was horrific! The reader learns about her imprisonment, abuse, escape, and addictions until she finally forges a new life for herself. However, I would like to know more about the mysterious Britt Spector -maybe her own series?

I thought the author did an excellent job bringing everything together in a touching conclusion. Overall, I found the Atlee Pine series thoroughly enjoyable and would be happy to read more books starring Atlee, Mercy and Carol.

Well THAT was a page turner! I have thoroughly the Memory Man series...this one, I missed and picked up this lates one by accident. Fortunately, Baldacci is very good about filling in the details of the past so that this is easily a stand alone thriller.

Mercy is the fourth and final book in the Mercy series. Atlee Pine and her friend and assistant, Carol Blum, finally catch up to Mercy Pine, Atlee's twin sister, now living as Eloise Cain. They discover the sad and shocking truth of her abduction and torture by the despicable Desserie Atkins. This

one has plenty of action as the Pine sisters get targeted by a militant religious fanatic and fight—together this time—for their lives. The end was predictable and a bit sappy, but I thought this was a great series.

This is the fourth novel centered around protagonist Atlee Pine, an FBI agent whose sister Mercy was kidnapped when they were only six years old. Over the last three novels Pine slowly collected bits and pieces of information about her twin sister's kidnapping and still has a sliver of hope that

she might be alive. In this novel, Pine is on leave from the FBI and tries to finally crack open this very personal case. With her is her assistant Carol Blum and together they are making headway in figuring out whether Mercy is still alive and where she might be. Will Atlee Pine finally find closure - and what kind of closure might that be?

Baldacci's novel is quite fast-paced and a real page turner as you really want to find out whether Atlee Pine's sister Mercy is still alive and where she might be. I really enjoyed reading this novel that concludes the story of the Pine sisters. 4 stars.

Over the top. Way too long dwelling on the abuse rather than the plot. There's no reason to keep repeating what you've already said more than once. Halfway through I wish it was over

In the fourth installment of David Baldacci’s Atlee Pine Series we finally get to meet Mercy, FBI agent Atlee Pine’s twin sister who was kidnapped from their family home 30 years ago. With the help of Carol Bloom ,her assistant -cum-friend ,Atlee currently on leave to concentrate on

her quest for answers, continues her search for her sister while also coming face to face with secrets about her family that have been long buried . While the previous books in the series give us the story from Atlee’s perspective , this book focuses both on Mercy’s journey and Atlee’s search. Mercy (now calling herself Eloise) has endured unimaginable torture in the hands of her captors and after escaping her journey has been a hard one with bouts of substance abuse, violence and exploitation but she has emerged from her ordeal a strong independent individual who now works multiple jobs to support herself and engages in underground MMA fights when strapped for cash packing quite the punch .She knows how to defend herself and stands up for anyone who needs her help which lands her in trouble against a wealthy and well connected criminal. She does not remember much of her life before captivity and when she sees the video of her escaping her captors on national television she mistakenly assumes that the FBI is looking for her in connection to the murder of one of her captors not knowing that it is her sister who is searching for her. She decides to go back to where it all happened while trying to avoid the FBI while Atlee takes a similar route to figure out Mercy’s present whereabouts . With danger at every corner, criminals in pursuit , unexpected allies and loads of action packed moments Atlee and Mercy are reunited and have to work together to save themselves and Carol from the clutches of a formidable adversary.
Some graphic descriptions of violence and torture are a bit hard to take and I did skim through some of it. For those who have been following this series from the beginning this gripping, fast paced and action packed novel wraps up the story pretty well . Though this is not my favorite David Baldacci series I really liked how the story comes togethor in the end. I think there is potential for stories featuring Atlee, Mercy , Carol Blum and other characters featured in this novel in the future. I do recommend, however, reading this series in sequence rather than treating it as a stand-alone novel so as to fully enjoy this thrilling ride.
