Fanny is compromised by her father's suicide and her uncle's avarice, Sophie is compromised by her need for her father's attention, and her playful and sometimes wild spirit. Amanda, the third of the group is the most aware of the social obligations of her station in life, while still desiring to spread her wings and venture into a career that is largely forbidden to women of her time. In this story, the reader is drawn into Amanda's world, hoping against hope that she will somehow be allowed to pursue her passion.
