Not bad YA. The plotting starts a little slowly but picks up. It uses some fairly familiar tropes to get the story going which affect the pacing. McGrath has done a fairly good job in creating his world although the time lapse between the first book and this book should probably have been a bit

longer. The shorter time period makes the actions of the inhabitants a bit strained in places. Not great but not a bad story for young readers, and parents could use the book as a read a loud to younger children.

A more engaging story then the first book (Chosen Ones) and written in a more 'happening' pace, while still retaining a very slight similarity to 'Narnia'. Plot development was good, but the ending was abrupt. It was not that it hinted at a follow-up book, the ending was all of two pages which

(this) reader felt akin to a bad landing! All in all, still a decent read.
