Description

This time around, Hood is running the California-Mexico border with the ATF, searching for the iron river, the massive and illegal flow of handguns and automatic weapons that fuels the bloody cartel wars south of the border. Gunrunners by nature aren't exactly ethical, but the lengths they'll go to, and the innocent lives they'll risk, are shocking even to Hood. Most shocking of all is the close personal connection Hood finds wrapped up in events south of the border, a connection that shakes him to his core.

You really have to like guns to read this. The story is sound - Mexican border gun fights with gangs is really bad and this shows us how bad. Charlie has the same characters from other books.

This is audio book I picked up randomly at the library and my first exposure to T. Jefferson Parker. I started it three times because I just wasn't into it. Not sure if it was the writing or the narration. But the third time, I really liked it! Now that I know it's part of a series featuring

Charlie Hood, I'll look for others.

The book opens with a man being hit by a car while changing his tire on the side of the road. He's flung into the desert and is eventually rescued and hospitalized in Buenavista near the U.S./Mexico border.

Charlie Hood, ATF agent, is part of a stakeout team who kills a bystander during an operation gone wrong. Sadly, the young man gunned down is the son of the head of the Gulf Cartel, one of the world's most violent men. He retaliates by sending his forces across the border and kidnapping one of Charlie's team members. The U.S. won't start a war for one man, even if Mexicans illegally entered the country to kidnap an American citizen. And the Mexican government is hands-off because the crime was committed by the cartel.

While the drugs/arms/war drums beat, Charlie visits Mike Finnegan, the man who was hit in the dessert. Finnegan has an eerie ability to know about things he shouldn't, like details from the ATF investigation and kidnapping. This keeps Charlie coming back to discover who this strange man is.

Although I liked the plot, I'm not sure how much I actually liked Charlie Hood. He kind of had a flat affect. But I'm definitely looking for another title. David Colacci narrates the book.
