Description

"Caitlyn Sullivan had come from a long line of Hollywood royalty, stretching back to her Irish immigrant great-grandfather. At nine, she was already a star- yet still an innocent child who loved to play hide and seek with her cousins at the family home in Big Sur. It was during one of those games that she disappeared. Some may have considered her a pampered princess, but Cate was in fact a smart, scrappy fighter, and she managed to escape her abductors. Dillon Cooper was shocked to find the bloodied, exhausted girl huddled in his house - but when the teenager and his family heard her story they provided refuge, reuniting her with her loved ones. Cate's ordeal, though, was far from over. First came the discovery of a shocking betrayal that would send someone she'd trusted to prison. Then there were years spent away in western Ireland, peaceful and protected but with restlessness growing in her soul. Finally, she would return to Los Angeles, gathering the courage to act again and get past the trauma that had derailed her life. What she didn't yet know was that two seeds had been planted that long-ago night - one of a great love, and one of a terrible vengeance..."--Provided by publisher.… (more)

More suspense than romance--although it's a satisfying romance--and more of a family story than either.

Cate Sullivan's life changed when she was kidnapped as a child. Her mother's continuing betrayal shapes her life, as does her remaining, close-knit family, and the good friends who helped her.
After a number of false starts, she finds her place--and true love.

I went into this book with high hopes and I was happy and I stayed that way for maybe the first 1/4 of the book. The crime itself was clever and the reason's for it, well, cliched but they are cliches for a good reason sometimes!

After that Hideaway became an over-cliched mess of repetition, oh poor
Show More
me's, underdeveloped characters and overstuffed with useless descriptions (of land, house, clothes, etc.) that didn't help the story along one little bit -it was just filler. And did I mention the repetition in this book? I felt this was used to pad the book as I felt this book was dragged out to the nth degree. I feel like the book would have been wonderful had they cut it by about 100 pages.

I did learn a lot about voice acting though and that was interesting.

This was one book that really had me engaged and excited to see how it turned out. I love that it was suspense based with some romance mixed in but it was the "who done it" that keep in enthralled. I won this ARC from Goodreads and was so happy to do so. If you love Nora Roberts or suspense filled

books, then you will love this one too. I do wish there was a little bit more to the story but with out giving anything away, I can't say what I missed but if you read the book, I think you will figure it out. Totally worth the read.

I do not hide my obsession passion for Nora Roberts' novels. I find them akin to that great feeling of coming home and sinking into your own bed after a trip. They are comforting, welcoming, and entertaining. They never fail to improve my mood and put everything to rights in my messy mind.

Her
Show More
newest novel, Hideaway does just that. It is a story I loved from the opening page, as we meet the Sullivan family and follow Cate's ordeal as it unfolds. The Big Sur setting is the perfect anecdote to sheltering in place. As always, Ms. Roberts' descriptions are so vivid that it makes you want to move there. All of the characters have a work ethic that is admirable, dedicated to doing their jobs to the best of their abilities no matter their fame and wealth. Plus, Ms. Roberts reiterates her oft-used theme that the best types of families are those you make, whether they include biological family members or not. The romance element of the novel is fluid and believable and enhances the full story. To me, Hideaway is another fabulous offering by what I consider to be a queen of entertaining storytelling.

This was an enjoyable and compelling coming-of-age/romantic suspense; I haven’t read a “classic” (type—it’s a new book) Nora Roberts in decades, and this was a great one. FYI reverse trigger warning for anyone wondering (as it would have helped me): no animals were harmed, and there was
Show More
no sexual abuse in the heroine’s abduction as a child (the copy kind of worried me).

It follows some well worn tropes used by Nora Roberts and you can almost see the beats she hits but, as usual, she hits them well and makes it an engaging read.

Caitlyn Sullivan is betrayed at nine-years-old when she's kidnapped and when the dust falls from the event she finds herself facing the
Show More
issues that raised. She is part of an acting dynasty and finds a role in her world later. When she returns to her family home to face her past the past is starting to catch up with several of the people involved.

I enjoyed this, the characters sparked for me and they were well written. It was a bad decision book club book and deprived me of sleep while I was engaged by reading it.

Suspenseful reading. Very interesting characters. I just re-read it on Kindle from the library. The only thing I wished was different was that I found the ending a little abrupt. I would have liked a little more closure with the Caitlyn's mother, who reminded me of Donald Trump. And I know this is
Show More
a little overused but I would have liked to see it end with the wedding.

Not my usual fare but enjoyable on a hot summer day. Three generations of Irish/California support one another and especially Caitlyn who experiences a kidnapping at age 10. The male romantic lead is quickly identified but it takes Cate decades to recognize this.

Apparently all I can read in year two of the pandemic is Nora Roberts (as opposed to year one which was mostly filled with Pride and Prejudice adaptations...). More recycled characters here..the male lead, Dillon, is the rancher we saw in Come Sundown and a couple other early works about Montana.

It's been a long time since we've seen a show business family (Emma in Public Secrets? Or Eve Benedict in Genuine Lies ), but this one is lovely--and Irish!--and it is definitely the first time she has blended Hollywood glamor with the wholesome life on the ranch. And in beautiful Big Sur, CA, no less! Fun and recommended, like all of her long-form mystery romances.

Hideaway is a well written suspenseful story from beginning to end. All of the characters seem real. All of the settings are well described. All of the situations that the characters are in are plausible. There is suspense, love and most of all family holding the story together. The book is highly

recommended and received four stars in this review.

The Hideaway is the story of Caitlyn Sullivan, youngest in a long line of Sullivans who are famous Hollywood actors. At 9 years old, Caitlyn has already had parts in movies, making her a star when she is kidnapped from her great-great grandfather's memorial. Caitlyn saves herself by climbing down
Show More
from a window using sheets as a rope and running to a nearby house to get help. There she meets Dillon Cooper and his family who call the police and Caitlyn's father. When Caitlyn's mother is found to be part of the scheme to kidnap her, she is arrested and sentenced to prison along with her two co-conspirators. As Caitlyn grows up, she is haunted by a series of crimes that all relate back to her kidnapping.
Even though The Hideaway lacked some conflict and some character development, it still portrays characters that readers would like to know and conveys detailed settings showing the reader wonderful places to live, making the story an enjoyable read.

Hideaway
4.5 Stars

Written in the classic Nora Roberts style reminiscent of some of her earlier works, such as Public Secrets and River's End, Hideaway focuses on the development of the heroine from childhood into adulthood. Caitlyn Sullivan, the scion of a famous acting dynasty, is a very appealing
Show More
heroine who overcomes the myriad of obstacles in her path with intelligence, strength, and resilience. One small issue is that young Cate sometimes comes across as far more mature than her age would suggest.

The romance is satisfying and anyone who has read a Nora book will immediately recognize the hero - solid, stalwart, loyal and sexy as all get out. That said, there could have been a bit more sizzle and spice to their relationship.

In terms of the suspense plot, the mystery element is minor as the identity of the villains is revealed early on and the action revolves around the lives of the victims as they adapt to the circumstances. Again one minor issue is that Charlotte got off much to lightly and it is a shame the Aiden never received is own HEA.

In sum, Nora's writing is captivating from the start and this is an immensely enjoyable book recommended for fans and newbies alike.

This isn't either romance or suspense, so if you are looking for that you will be disappointed (like a lot of these reviews). What it is is a sprawling family drama with a young woman's journey at the center, a style that was all the rage in the 70s and 80s. It reminded me of Judith Krantz 's work,
Show More
especially Princess Daisy. And when thinking of it in that structure, I really enjoyed it. I loved the two families at the center, supportive and loving. Cate's journey was one I enjoyed going on. It's a big book that was worth my time.

Hideaway / Nora Roberts - you read and read because it pulls you along so effortlessly. Ultimately, I'd say it's not entirely satisfying, and the thriller side of it became a bit too drawn out and not so interesting as the characters.
