Description

Fiction. Literature. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML: A high school rebel and a minister's daughter find strength in each other in this star-crossed tale of "young but everlasting love" (Chicago Sun-Times). There was a time when the world was sweeter....when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats.... Every April, when the wind smells of both the sea and lilacs, Landon Carter remembers 1958, his last year at Beaufort High. Landon had dated a girl or two, and even once sworn that he'd been in love. Certainly the last person he thought he'd fall for was Jamie, the shy, almost ethereal daughter of the town's Baptist minister....Jamie, who was destined to show him the depths of the human heart-and the joy and pain of living. The inspiration for this novel came from Nicholas Sparks's sister: her life and her courage. From the internationally bestselling author Nicholas Sparks, comes his most moving story yet.....… (more)

Reaction to A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
Nicholas Sparks’s A Walk to Remember is a heart wrenching story about a young, first love and heartbreak. While this may sound like a traditional love story, this novel was nothing of
Show More
the sort. I laughed, cried, and took time to dwell on the storyline. At times I put the book down to think, ponder, and imagine “what if.”
Sparks writes about two seventeen year olds, Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan, who live in Beaufort, North Carolina and find themselves unexpectedly in love. Landon was a typical rule-breaking, willing-to-do-anything-for-fun teenager, while Jamie was anything but. She carried her bible wherever she went, wore a plaid skirt with a sweater and a smile everyday, spent time weekly at the local orphanage, and said “hello” to every person she passed by, “just because.” Through a school play and periodical conversations on her front porch, they slowly grew quite fond of each other. It wasn’t long until they spent all their time together and Landon was falling for the girl he had once spent time making fun of. Throughout the formation of their friendship, however, Jamie had been keeping something from him. She had been diagnosed with leukemia six months previous and the side effects were worsening as the days passed. With the secret out, the two faced monumental hurdles together and their lives were changed forever. While they knew their love was special, strong, and impossible to let go of, they were aware that their time together was quickly coming to an end.
A surprising conclusion led the reader to believe that miracles can and do happen, one just needs to look deep for them. Sparks has a way of making every story he writes easy to connect to, even if the reader has never experienced what he’s writing about. His word choice is descriptive, picture-painting and mind boggling. The plot twisted and turned throughout the story, keeping the reader guessing to the very end.
Jamie and Landon’s story is one that I will not soon forget. Their strength together in the situation they were in was truly admirable. I believe that young love is a rare and extraordinary occurrence. Sparks sent a message to the reader that if it happens, to hold it tight and value it because it may never happen again.
I recommend Nicholas Sparks’s A Walk to Remember to all readers who are willing to let themselves cry and genuinely appreciate a one-of-a-kind love story.

Popular guy meets plain girl. She forces him to open his eyes and realize that there's to people than their looks. Good story--emotional, if you're a sap like me.

In this book, it talks about a boy who isnt the biggest Christian in the world, who lives in a small town. There is this girl who he and his friends thinks is kinda wierd. But when Landon meets Jamie, who is the minister's daughter, she tells him to open his eyes and see that there is more to life.

This book tells the sweet and sentimental story of young first love in the American south of the 1950's. Landon Carter is a normal teenage boy, and Jamie Sullivan is the saintlike daughter of the local Baptist minister. They don't seem to have much in common, but the circumstances of one year throw

them together and Landon begins to see Jamie in a different light, which will change his life forever. The story is gentle and poignant, and I enjoyed reading it. However, and I almost never feel this way, I truly believe that the movie was better executed. This may be my personal preference, mostly because the movie softens some of the religious overtones of the book, but I would still say that the book is an enjoyable read. It's also a good romantic story for teens, and was the recipient of the Colorado Blue Spruce Award, which is a literary award voted on by teens, for teens.

Its been a while since I read this book but found the story poingnant and the writing passable at best. However, I have since had the displeasure of meeting Mr. Sparks during my bookselling experience and do not ever see myself getting that bad taste out of my mouth. He is by far the most arrogant,
Show More
abrasive author I've ever met (and there are some doozies out there!) When a man acts like that, it become impossible to separate his work from him, so I will likely avoid everything with his name on it from now on, and advise others to do the same. My advice is skip this one and check out The Dressmaker by Elizabeth Oberbeck Bierkland instead--she's great (nice, too).

A very nice short read. It made me cry though. I recommend it for anyone who likes romance stories. This book shows a great moral that you cannot judge a book by its cover, or by what other people say about its cover. All in all a very sweet book.

I really loved this book. The movie is based on the book and lead me to read it. A real girly romantic novel.

Like all of Nicholas's books, this story is heart breaking and amazing. Props to Mr. Sparks.

This book was given to me. I casually picked up the book to read...and then was hooked. I could not put it down. It is written in the first person, and is of a man revisting his past in High School 40 years ago. He was a popular boy worried about what his friends thought. His name was landon

This novel is certainly a tear-jerker. It is a romantic tale of teenage love. It begins when Landon Carter must (unwillingly at first) work along side Jamie Sullivan (the goody two shoes of town). But as he gets to know Jamie better, he begins to fall for her, going against the status quo of his
Show More
friends. he soon learns that Jamie is dying and will pass shortly. However, Landon has grown to love her so much that he decides he must marry her. I love how the title transcends into Jamie's walk down the aisle of her wedding. I also how Landon grows as a person and realizes one should not live by sterotypes or expectations of others.

This book suprised me. It was in the point of view of a male and how he falls in love with an unlickly love. Sometimes those things that are best for us are right under our noses and we do not see them. This book helps discover that it is not bad to be different and everyone will find a true love.

I have read many Nicholas Sparks books and now keep of box of tissues with me when reading them. He writes 'like a woman' - I love it. I work in a secondary school library and this book is always on loan and in demand with the girls.

As with all books made in to movies this book is much better. That being said this is my second favorite book by Nicholas Sparks that I have read. This is a story about a first love that goes love and loses and Landon finds away to go on. I love the way you really get to know the people and you get

pulled into North Carolina every time you read one of theses books.

Having already seen the film of the same name, I was interested to see how the book would measure up, particularly given Sparks’s impressive reputation in the ‘weepie’ genre.

At first, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. The large print and slightly clunky first-person narrative
Show More
grated a bit and, at the opening of the novel, gave the impression that it would turn out to be, at best, a poorly-written teen-angst story.

However, this impression quickly dissolved as the novel progressed, and it became clear that this was, in fact, a reflection of the protagonist’s youthful awkwardness rather than a narrative fault. The story is recounted by Langdon Carter, a middle-aged man telling the story of his relationship with his wife. At seventeen, Jamie Sullivan is a very good, rather holier-than-thou minister’s daughter who spends all her time reading the Bible, rescuing animals and helping orphans while her peers make fun of her. Langdon, however, gets to know her better and, despite himself, falls in love – only to find out that she is struggling with a terrible secret which will shatter life as he knows it.

Of course I expected it to be sentimental; what I didn’t expect is that despite knowing the plot already, by the end of the novel I was crying as if my heart would break. An excellent, moving and inspiring tale of love and strength that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to incurable romantics.

Not sure if I've mentioned before, but, I'm not a big fan of Nicholas Sparks. 'A Walk to Remember' and 'The Notebook' are the only books of his that I like. The reason I read 'A Walk to Remember' was because I saw the movie. The movie was better than the book; but, the book was not bad. It was
Show More
actually good enough to give it five stars. I would recommend it to people who like romance.

'A Walk to Remember' is the story of a teenage guy who ends up falling for the unpopular, goody two-shoes girl. She comes from a Christian family; her father is also a pastor. She is also a very sheltered girl. Which, I think, is because she is sick. There's not much more that can be said without giving away the whole book.

I loved this book! I is so sweet about how he says " 'Your beautiful.' I knew everyone knew I had nailed my first line." It is so sweet and a tear jerker. But the movie was awful. Sorry to be blunt, but it is not even worth renting at Blockbuster. They modernized it. Instead of being set in the
Show More
50's, it's in present tense. They show Landon drinking, smoking, etc.. Plus, they whole photoshopped picture of Jamie turned me off. I could tell it was supposed to be touching, but it wasn't. Read the book first. It is 100% better than the movie.

I must have been in the mood for a romantic read because I absolutely loved it. I could not put it down & I needed a box of Kleenex beside me when I finished. So heart warming. Nicholas Sparks never dissapoints, at least not for me.

Sappy but wonderfully touching love story.

This was an enjoyable book. I wasn't sure at first if I would like a high school romance. Landon Carter who was at first a disagreeable, rather snobbish guy who acted superior to the students that were not popular like Jamie Sullivan. An incredibly unlikely pair got together when Landon was
Show More
desperate for a date for the homecoming dance. Not exactly the normal romance, but is intriguing to see how Landon is able to let go of his preconceived notions of her seemingly simple and plain look, religious beliefs and devotion to her father that is the local Baptist minister. He ends up learning the joys of love and the pain of extreme loss.

This book is a “quick read” and a good addition to any library collection. The plot and characters are realistic, describing emotions that are indicative of high school teenagers. The author poignantly describes the ups and downs of a first true love, as well as school popularity, school

acceptance, parent relationships, illness, sacrifices, and quality of life.

High school girls will be able to identify with Jamie’s character: innocent, kind, but also different, ignored and not understood. Teenage boys may likewise identify with Landon’s struggles to make changes in his life.
