Description

Watch John 'Four Leaf' Tayback as he fights a gruesome battle during the Vietnam War. But, this is actually a scene from 'Tropic Thunder,' a big-budget adaptation of Tayback's wartime memoir. Starring as the central platoon are Speedman, Lazarus, Chino and Portnoy, as well as young character actor Kevin Sandusky. To play the character of African American Sgt. Osiris, Lazarus dyes his skin dark and refuses to break from character. When a scene goes awry, the film's director, Damien Cockburn goes off. With filming a month behind schedule only five days into shooting, the real 'Four Leaf' takes Cockburn aside and suggests that he drop the actors in a real jungle and use hidden cameras to capture the action. Chaos and insanity ensue.

I think if you compared success with talent as a ratio, Ben Stiller would be at the top of the list. Through his skill as a screenwriter and director (and apparently pal to everyone in Hollywood) he has parlayed his modest acting skills into a solid career. And he is willing to do anything, as

Tropic Thunder proves. There is something here to offend everyone. Jack Black also proves that if Deliverance is ever re-made, he would be good for the Ned Beatty role. But moving on. Along the way there are a few laugh out loud moments courtesy of the sheer ridiculousness of it all. And the fact that the actors seem to be having a hell of a good time. Tom Cruise, almost unrecognizable as a megalomaniac producer is sensational. About the only way the film doesn't manage to offend is in its treatment of women--since there are hardly any here. This makes a good late night alcohol-fueled watch. Just don't make me do it again.
