When a deadly attack tears her world apart, Mari reveals the strength of her powers and the forbidden secret of her dual nature as she embarks on a mission to save her people. I received a free copy of this book from GoodReads.

Moon Chosen is an incredible book. P.C. Cast has penned the start to another impressive series with this 600 page entry into a world of wonder. The people central in this book are all well characterized and have unusual depth but it's the social

aspects of Moon Chosen that really sparkle. Cast has created an apocalyptic world here that doesn't focus on what was lost but what has been built since. Humanity has fragmented into multiple groups that have adapted to the new world in amazing ways. In this book there's a focus on two groups, the Earth Walkers, matriarchal moon oriented clans and an arboreal sun oriented people referred to as The Tribe. The plot moves along due to friction between these two groups as well as political machinations from a third group, less well characterized, composed of urban mutants.

Moon Chosen takes its time at the beginning to establish the characters of Leda & Mari, a mother and daughter in the Earth Walker clan, and the dangers and beauties of their environment. Cast then adds more and more detail and action until you're quite hooked. This is an amazing book and there's enough hints of other groups of people and environments that I'm sure this series will be breaking new ground well into the future. This is quite the world that P.C. Cast is creating here.

In addition to the fantasy element there's a love story here that transcends local allegiance and world view. Like Romeo and Juliet, the moon and sun crossed couple of Moon Chosen have history and culture to transcend but hopefully a happier ending awaits them. Mari and Nik are memorable characters and their budding romance adds a rich tonal quality to the discord between their peoples. This is a really good book!

A different flavour of post-apocalypse, not perfect but pretty good and I looked forwarded each time to continuing the story. A lucky find at the library as I haven't heard of the author before but will now look for a previous series while I wait for the sequel/s to be published. Seeeequellll...

I can't listen to another minute. I do not like these authors' style, I find the narrators voice annoying and I just don't care about the characters at all.
Major Gripes
1) Repetition: Every time a character speaks to another they use their name. Omg the "Mama, Mama, Mama.." had me wanting to
Show More
scream "Make it stop" There was also repetition the story, events rehashed and retold many times.
2) TSTL- this girl who is and adult but acts like a child, get's herself into situations that common sense and her mother's warnings tell her not to. Life threatening situations !
3) The slavers leader just now after years and years feels like there may be more to his captives ?

Three red flags that hit me upside the head. I'm done. This author is not one I plan on reading again

If it hadn't been for the first three hundred pages, this might have been a tolerable read; not great but the sort of mindless rubbish one could enjoy at the beach. Sadly, the plot was rendered completely unenjoyable by an interminable, uninteresting and awkwardly written set-up for the actual

story which doesn't start until halfway through the book. Any relevant information contained in the beginning chapters could easily have been referenced as flashbacks or memory-sharing between characters but instead we are treated to page after page after page of stilted conversations and pointless musings that do nothing but breed irritation. By the time our protagonist's mother finally died, I was glad to see the back of her after waiting soooo long for it to happen since it was clear from the first chapter that would be the catalyst for the whole story. It saddens me to see what was a good story idea so tragically bungled.

Many thanks to St. Martin's Griffin Press for the advanced reader copy.
