Description

Medic Ryon Drake has never been good at following protocol, so she doesn't think twice about rendering emergency care when a young girl's life is at stake--even if the girl is in the throes of Werefever and any sane mortali should know better. It isn't the bright shining pain of the bite or even the wrenching agonies of the fever that convinces her everything in her life has changed. It's the way she feels about the blonde with the silver-blue eyes leaning over her hospital bed when she finally wakes up. Sylvan, the Alpha of the Adirondack Timberlake Pack--the one woman Drake can't have. And the only one she wants. The first in the Midnight Hunters series.

Um, whoa. This was VERY graphic. Not being familiar with erotica, I was a bit unprepared, especially as all of the encounters were female-female, which I wasn't quite expecting...

However, lots of sex aside, this was very compelling, with a detailed supernatural world (based around all that sex,

which reminded me a lot of what friends tell me of the Anita Blake series).

Supernatural creatures have 'come out of the closet', making many humans uncomfortable and unsure of how weres, vampires, fae, psychics and mages - 'Praeterns' - fit in. Sylvan Mir is the Alpha of the largest werewolf pack in North America and as such, has much responsibility in working toward equal rights for the preternatural species. Adding to her current political problems, young were females have been disappearing in the local area (near the Adirondacks in NY state), and several humans have been admitted to local hospitals showing signs of the deadly were fever. When human medic gets a little too close to a human suffering with a suspicious fever, she wakes to find herself were, and caught up in Sylvan's problems - and with a fierce attraction to the were Alpha.

Raand does a good job in setting up this supernatural world, illustrating how the Pack's hierarchy works and how the were's sexuality is very much a part of were life. The sex was a bit much for me, but the chemistry between characters is potent. This was a sexy, exciting and interesting take on the urban fantasy/supernatural storyline.

skipped through this to avoid the vampire bits, skipped through it some more to avoid the shooting clits. then went back and read the book because the characters were kinda awesome and compromising. enjoyed it.

awful lot of dominance displays, though.
