As Sophie grows older and bigger, Sophie's beloved Grandpa grows older and smaller until he is no longer there. Touching, with simple text, but quite deep subtext. Robinson's vivid illustrations, based on Afro-American culture, take up the whole page. There is also an earlier edition, illustrated

by Craig Smith who based his illustrations on Australian-European culture, and the illustrations lend a different focus to the text.

Sophie and her Grandfather are very close and you can see how much they care for one another through the single sentences on each page. The story opens with before Sophie was born. Her progression through life is noted and her relationship with her Grandfather is the key focus. Her Grandfather dies

Sophie was a young girl who loved her grandfather, as she grew up her grandfather became older and smaller. In time her grandfather passes away and Sophie is upset, but brings new life into the world with her daughter. This is a great book to read to children to example the cycle of life.

Simply told story of Sophie and her Grandfather and the 'circle of life' theme. I did not care for the illustrations but then I'm not artistic. I have no idea if children like these creative illustrators I keep encountering in picture books.
