This picture book describes a small village and a little tree that grows in a footpath. Over time the sapling grows into a massive tree, the path morphs into a lane and then a busy road, and the village becomes a developing town.

The language in this book is easy to understand but not simplistic.

The illustrations are lively and colorful, providing some multiculturalism by deriving from Indian folk art.

However, there's something I can't quite lay my finger on about this book that kept me from really enjoying it. Mostly I felt like the book was lacking a story or message. The narrative talks about the little boy who grows up alongside the tree, but he is by no means a fully developed character. (He doesn't even have a name.) That doesn't bother me too much in a children's book though. But the end of the book basically tacks on a moral about stopping to listen to traditional stories, even though that wasn't discussed anywhere else. This could be explained more by a teacher or parent to a child and this book might make a good companion to lessons about nature or another book about taking time to respect traditions, but I don't feel like this book really stands alone.

A tree becomes a respite for people caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A charming story about appreciating the value of slowness in a fast-moving world beautifully illustrated in traditional Indian folk art styles.

I find that this book is not very memorable or leaves a lasting impression. In the story we have a tree that is looked after for years. Then as the city grows more construction is put around the tree until finally the tree is cut down. People remember the beauty of this tree and replant another so

I love the idea of this story. It has mature artwork in it. I think that the artwork may appeal more to adults than to children. There might be a small disconnect in the art and the story. There is still a great message and fun to be had though.

“Out of the Way! Out of the Way!” is a lyrical story about a little boy who one day stumbles upon a tree growing on a path in his village. As time goes on throughout the book the village evolves into something of a city, and as the village changes there are a lot of changes but no matter what

people continue to stop and listen to the music that comes from the rustling of the leaves on the tree. I, unfortunately, was not a huge fan of this book for several reasons. I found that the illustrations to be a bit of a distraction to the text, they were beautiful but they were a bit overwhelming to look at while reading. This book took place in the Middle East, but I could not tell you exactly where in the Middle East, nor could I explain the culture of the region in the Middle East that this book was representing. The language and the illustrations in the book made me believe that this book came from the Middle East, but I found myself becoming more and more confused about the origins of the book than the purpose of the book. I do like the overall message of the book, that things will continue to change but there are some things that will always be constant, but I still felt that the message could have been portrayed stronger method than it was through the text.

There are two reasons I enjoyed this picture book. First, the illustrations are jumbled as if a child had drawn them, which adds to the idea of the jumbled environment when avoiding the newly growing tree. Second, the words “out of the way” dance across the page to mimic the movement of people

avoiding the tree. Out of the Way! Out of the Way is about a young boy who finds a new tree sprout growing in the middle of a busy roadway. The young boy takes care of the tree and yells “out of the way” each time someone tries to run the tree over. Eventually the tree grows to be very tall. The roadway changes to go around the tree due to its growth and the boys help. The tree becomes a meeting point and a relaxation spot for the community. The big idea would be to preserve nature and care for it.
