Jamie wants to walk in the St.Patricks Day parade but everyone tells him he is too small. He gets up early, puts on his mom's coat, dad's hat, takes his brother's flute and his dog and makes his way through town and up Acorn Hill. On discovering he has made it he goes back home. No one knows what

This book is about a little boy in Ireland who wants to participate in the St. Patrick's Day parade but everyone around him believes he is too young. He wakes up early in the morning and walks the trail of the parade with his dog, to prove that he is big enough to join the parade. He arrives at the

final parade site, the stage, and feels glorious. He then goes home to find that everyone is still asleep, but he is okay with that because he knows that he accomplished his goal.

This is relatable for younger readers, because oftentimes, younger children are told by their parents they aren't yet old enough to do things.

Jaimie wakes up first on St. Patrick's Day morning and becomes sad when he sees all of his families props for the parade, but none for him. His family thinks he is too small to march in the parade. To prove them wrong, he takes their costumes and starts a parade of his own.

Little boy is too small to walk in the parade, but he will show them. He gets up early and walks the parade route all the way up the hill to the stage. Then he walks down again, very cute, very Irish. Too long for storytime.

Cute story about a boy with the "I think I can" mentality. Very inspirational.

Summary: This book is about a young boy names Jamie who wakes up early on St. Patrick's Day to show that he's not too small to walk all the way to the top of Acorn Hill. He marches with his dog while his family and most of the town are sleeping. He completes the march and gets back home before his
Show More
parents or brothers even notice. They think that he is going to be sad because he is too small to go to the march, but they do not know that he had already done it!

Review: I think this book's main message was that people are capable of doing things if they put their mind to it, regardless of what others may believe. For example, when Jamie is getting tired climbing up Acorn Hill, he says to his dog, "Don't be giving up now Nell, we're nearly there," and then they get to the top. I enjoyed this book.

Resentful at being excluded from marching in the local St. Patrick's Day parade, young Jamie Donovan awakens extra early on the big day and, together with his dog Nell, walks all the way to the top of Acorn Hill by himself. On his way he meets up with a number of people from his small Irish

village. Having proved that he can do it, he heads home again, having left a little flag on the dancing stage to show he was there...

A sweet holiday story about a young boy with a can-do spirit, St. Patrick's Day In the Morning was first published in 1980, and has a somewhat old-fashioned feeling to it. The Ireland depicted here, in both text and artwork, felt somewhat historical to me, rather than contemporary, which makes sense, as author Eve Bunting moved away from (Northern) Ireland in the 1950s, and illustrator Jan Brett is American. Leaving that aside - and it isn't necessarily a criticism - the story were was engaging, and will no doubt strike a chord with many young children, who will identify with Jamie's experience of being told he is too young for something. The artwork is cute, although not Brett's strongest. Recommended to anyone looking for solidly engaging stories about St. Patrick's Day for younger children.

Little Jamie wakes up early on St. Patrick's Day, disgruntled he's considered too little to join in the parade. He sets out with his dog and they traverse the town and ultimately climb the hill to where the festivities will be. He comes home and falls asleep before anyone wakes up, and his brother

thinks he's too sleepy to come to the parade. But after all, what do they know?
