Description
This volume is the third edition of Chernick's book on the Colombian peace process. The study conducts a comparative historical analysis of efforts to pacify the country, from 1984 to 2006, with observations on the process begun under President Juan Manuel Santos. The volume makes a valuable contribution by identifying the many missed opportunities for peace since the first efforts under President Belisario Betancourt all the way to the Uribe administration. Several of the chapters address the interplay between international actors, domestic elites, spoilers, and the role of the illicit drug trade over time. Chernick's assertion that peace cannot be achieved through military victory is as relevant today as ever.
