Abstract: "This dissertation demnostrates that the Church remains active in both Cuba and Vietnam in much of hte same way as it was in communist Poland. Using communist Poland (1948 - 1989) as the historical, paradigmatic case, and then comparing it to the period of communist rule in Cuba and Vietnam (i.e. since 1959 and 1975, respectively), this analysis challenges pessimistic assessments of the Church's efforts in supporting political liberalization. By integrating theories from coparative politics (democratization studies) and contemporary political theory (the work of Claude Lefort and John Rawls), this dissertation examines exactly how the Church contributes to political liberalization through the application of its moral and normative principles).
