This wonderful pamphlet serves as an introduction to the life and message of Thomas Kelly, 1893-1941, author of the classic A Testament of Devotion, as written by a Quaker scholar and former student of his. This is a pamphlet to be read and reread; it is inspiring and helpful. (See also PHP #21, The Reality of the Spiritual World, by Thomas Kelly.)
Kelly affirmed that we can learn to live our lives on two levels at once, with both our earthly responsibilities and the divine Presence. This can be done only by developing internal practices and habits of the mind, over years. Kelly called us to a life of prayer, and discussed several kinds of prayer, several of them wordless, such as the prayer of resting in God's presence, or the prayer of inward listening, or of inward offering up. Kelly, a Friend of deep experience of God, called us to holy obedience, which stems from life lived at the Center.
