Arshile Gorky created an outpouring of drawings and paintings that constitutes a primary source of Abstract Expressionism. He has been called the last Surrealist and the first Abstract Expressionist, but his work is unique in its complex poetic evocations and its foundation in the tradition of the old masters and Cubism.
