Dramatic novel for young teenagers about two outcast children, a kitchen maid called Sarah Jane, and an Aboriginal boy whose name is a secret, who travel through the evolving Australian landscape to live with the spirits of the ancient land. The author was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1986, and has won many other awards for children's fiction, including the Children's Book Council Book of the Year Award.
