When Zoe Hillard was 14 years old in 1903 she kept a school notebook which, along with writing on topics she was evidently studying, had diary entries.She wrote on a very few days in 1903, a few more in 1904 and 1905,. During 1906 she wrote briefly but consistently about the activities and events in her life. She also copied various kinds of materials such as recipes, sayings, essays, and advice admonitions. The author, Zoe's granddaughter, has supplemented these items with her commentaries based on family records and historical research about the Allegheny National Forest (PA) area, Zoe's home country.
