A picture book with no words. A beautiful story of a boy whose snowman comes to life, and their friendship and play, and the inevitable regret when the snowman melts. We also have the wonderful video with haunting music. A classic.

This wordless story is told similar to a cartoon in short little boxes that are sequenced together to tell a story. It is a sweet tale of the adventures of a boy and the snowman he created as they begin to explore inside the house at night while the boy's parents are sleeping. Then the snowman
Show More
takes the boy on a flying adventure outside. The ending is sad when the snowman is melted in the morning.

I grew up with this book, music and movie. The book is the still version of the wonderful tale of a boy and his snowman. The snowman comes to life and takes the boy on a magical journey through winter.

Despite its lack of words, this book speaks with images: an abundant and rich collage depicted with a limited and bright palette. This is a classic and formal example of what a wordless book should be.

I read this book when I taught a class of toddlers. They loved it and would ask for it over and over again. I'm not even sure if I told the same story each time I read it but it sure was fun to make up words about the snowman coming to life and the pictures are so nice to look at too. I would often
Show More
set this book out in the mornings for the kids to look at and I would sometimes hear them making up a story. It would have been fun to have them actually tell the story during story time.

The enchanting story of a boy who makes a snowman, and he comes to life. The boy and the snowman share a humorous adventurous evening together, in the morning, the snowman has vanished. A gentle, kind, dreamy book. Great for children to make up/draw their own endings to.

A snowman comes alive in this wordless book about a boy and his snowman who seems to become his friend. It would be fun to have students put words to this book. They would understand how a story is structured by using the pictures to help them.

This delightful book of a boy and his friendship with a snowman is quite unique. I loved how both the snowman and the boy each share their world with each other. The fact that the snowman does not melt inside the house is fun, because you would dream that it would stay intact! It was really cute
Show More
that the parents remain completely asleep and unaware during the whole "play date" between the snowman and the little boy. One of my favorite parts was when the snowman takes the boy on a ride above the city, all in his robe-- did he ever get cold? This story was very cleverly illustrated and depicts exactly the mood and tone of the short but sweet friendship.

What a beautiful wordless book! The illustrations allow the reader to tell their own story of the boy and his friend 'The Snowman'. The Snowman comes to life and what an amazing adventure they share together while his parents are sound asleep.

This book is super creative and a wordless story about a boy who creates a snowman that comes to life at night. The book gives the ability for the reader to create their own story. The pictures are great illustrations.

Use with many grade levels to encourage creativity in literary expression. Younger students can verbalize the events depicted in the story, practicing storytelling skills and oral language structure, while actively
Show More
engaging in sequencing of events. Older students can use the story to enhance their creative writing and descriptive writing skills.

This book is about a boy who builds a snowman. The snowman comes to life, and they embark on a night full of adventure and exploration. In the morning, when the boy awakens, he discovers that his snowman has melted. Addresses the issue of friendship.

Use for independent reading, narrative building, public speaking.

The Snowman was an amazing book! I loved how each page was full of pictures and extensive details. I loved being able to follow along with the story by just looking at pictures an having no words. A part of me did feel sad at the end when I saw that the snowman had melted. The snowman was little
Show More
boy's new friend an they did all sorts of things together!

I haven't seen a wordless book in a long time, and this was an easy story to follow. I like how the illustrations are small on some pages and larger on others and how each pane is separated by white space. It reminds me of pictures set next to each other ready for putting in an album. The
Show More
illustrations appear to be of colored pencil. There are soft and dark colors that seem to complement the main character as well as make the white snowman pop out.

This may be one of the first graphic novel / wordless picture books for the young ones. You have likely seen the 1982 cartoon adaptation of this story, however, the original pencil crayon paneling in the book set the stage for a cultural infatuation with snowmen for years to come.

I truly enjoy this book for its simplicity and great pictures.

This story, as I interpret it, depicts a boy who builds a snowman and the snowman comes to life that night. The pictures indicate that the boy and snowman are exploring various objects around the house that the snowman isn't familiar
Show More
with.
The book continues with a flying adventure where the boy and snowman take off into the air and fly over the town.

I believe this book is an excellent book to introduce to reluctant or unable readers as a way of improving confidence with books. There are so many opportunities for literacy development because there are no restrictions as to text or meaning in the pictures.

The Snowman by Raymond Briggs is in the style of Frosty the Snowman but told only in pictures. A boy spends the day building a man sized snowman and that night the snowman comes alive.

First the snowman explores the world inside the boy's house. He learns about dinner, TV, the fire place and all
Show More
sorts of other domestic things. To him the house is an exotic, curious, sometimes magical and sometimes dangerous place.

In return for the boy's kindness, the snowman takes him on a nighttime journey. They fly to Russia and take in the sites. To the boy it's a far away, icy, curious place. To the snowman, perhaps it feels more like home.

The book has an open-ended conclusion. For children learning story structure, The Snowman could be used to open the discussion on how stories are told and how they can be interpreted. It could also be used to get children to provide their own version of the story to accompany the panels.

The book won the Horn Book Award for picture books in 1979 as well as the Zilvren Griffel award the same year. In other words, I was five when the book was first published. I could have read it when it was newly in print, but I don't don't think I did.

A charming wordless story, although somewhat sad. I was a bit concerned over how my son would take to the ending, so we kind of quickly brushed over it and moved on to the next thing. I remember seeing the animated version of the book, and I had pleasant memories from it.

A beautiful book with dreamy, soft illustrations which captures the imagination and feeling of both winter and youthful innocents. Using themes of imagination and adventure, the book tells the story of a young boy who dreams his snowman comes to life and the two share a short but touching
Show More
friendship.

I really enjoyed this book. I have vague memories of first encountering it when I was much younger but I had forgotten about it. Now I see how the sweeping imagery and artful illustrations create a dreamy feeling that is appropriate, both in capturing that feeling of winter but also of youthful imagination. Each image has a resonance or emotional tone that is amazing conveyed without words. As an adult, I could sit and look at each one for many minutes, admiring the artistry and beautiful simplicity.

Summary: A little boy awakens to it snowing outside. He hurries to get dressed so he can rush outside to build a snowman. The snowman comes to life and becomes the boys friend. Everyday the boy and the snowman play together by doing different things together. Every night the snowman returns to the
Show More
boys front yard. One morning the boy hurries and wakes up to see the snowman, but the snowman has melted.

Personal Reaction: I remember growing up in Germany and looking forward to winters. I always knew my family and I would be able to go sledding, make snowballs and build snowmen together. This is one of my favorite childhood memories!

Extension Ideas:
1) Have children write a journal entry about what they like to do in the winter or when it snows.
2) Have children color/draw a picture that goes along with their journal entry.

This is a wordless novel but the message and story are very clear. It I the classic tale of a boy who builds a snowman that comes to life. The boy and the snowman share many adventures and become close friends. They travel to far off places and share many fun times. The snowman return to boy's yard
Show More
each night. It has sad ending when one day the boys rushed to meet his friend only to find him melted. Student could see the power of pictures with this book and could create their own dialogue or story specifics. It could be used to develop characters.
