Local notes

Creating a Life is a powerful series of commentaries on the importance of the examined life, illustrating how we may arrive at an understanding of our life choices and relationships by exploring our core complexes and personal history. With insight and compassion grounded in the humanist side of analytical psychology, Hollis elucidates the circuitous way of individuation. The text is deeply enriched by the inclusion of poems and excerpts from the works of modern writers (including John Fowles, Rilke, D.H. Lawrence, Pascal and Kierkegaard).

Hollis has hit the big time (hardback books in mainline bookstores) but he was more creative back when he was writing these booklets for Inner City Books.

Here he takes you through various stages of life, using Jungian insights and literature hand in hand. The intention is that being forewarned is

being forearmed.

I don't think you can really change your life by reading a book, at least not those of us who read like hungry vultures, but this book can point you in some interesting directions. Some of it may feel new-agey, but that is just the Jungian stuff coming out.

I would recommend this book for someone who is working on making a major life change, but I would recommend that the reader be involved in therapy along side of the reading.
