5/11 1997 - Guy Fawkes dag - sprænger en maskeret mand - V - en bombe i det engelske parlament. Efter en kort atomkrig i 1987 er England forarmet og overtaget af fascisterne under lederen Adam Susan. Undervejs til magten har de begået mange forbrydelser. V har systematisk udryddet over 40 mennesker, der var ansvarlige for Larkhill koncentrationslejren fra 1992-1993. Lewis Prothero, som er "Skæbne" deres propagandamaskinens synlige ansigt, bliver gjort sindssyg, men resten udryddes. V citerer Shakespeare og efterlader sine ofre en rose - en Violet Carson - af en type der ellers var troet udryddet under krigen. Han gemmer sig i undergrundsbanens kringelkroge - The Shadow Gallery - og tager hånd om en 16-årig pige Evey Hammond. Biskop Anthony James Lilliman og Dr. Delia Anne Surridge bliver dræbt. Derek Almond fra "Fingeren" bliver dræbt i tjenesten juleaften 1997 ude ved Dr. Delia og afløst af Peter Creedy som betjent og privat af Roger Dascombe, som lægger an på Rosemary Almond, der ellers er alene i verden uden enkepension eller uddannelse. Dascombe bliver dræbt ved en fejl af politiet da de stormer Jordan Tower som er blevet overtaget af V for en stund.
Delias dagbog ligger fremme ved hendes lig og den starter 30 april 1993 og beskriver bestialske forsøg med hormonbehandling på politiske fanger. V er god til havearbejde og mens de andre fanger dør som fluer af forsøgene, ser han ud til at trives. Han bruger kunstgødning og nogle kemikalier og sprænger anlægget i luften. Nogle af de ansatte bliver udsat for giftgas, han har lavet, og dør af det. Andre dør i den efterfølgende brand. V's hjemmelavede sennepsgas og napalm og gødningsbomber er meget effektive. V undslipper fra det rygende inferno og forsvinder. Hen over de næste fire år, dør mere end 40 af de ledende skikkelser fra Larkhill lejren. Protero, Lilliman og Delia er de sidste tre og nu er de også døde.
V har brugt lejligheden ved Jordan Tower til at sende sin egen version af "Aftennyhederne". Heri skoser han befolkningen for ikke at tage ansvar. De kunne have ladet være med at vælge de ringe ledere og de kunne have vippet dem af pinden, men nej.
Vi følger Eric Finch og hans assistent Dominic, begge fra "Næsen", efterhånden som de opsporer mere og mere information om V. Finch bliver mere og mere fjern og efter en episode, hvor han slog Creedy, bliver han sendt på ferie.
Evey har været skjult ved V, men vil ikke hjælpe ham med at slå folk ihjel og beder om at blive fri. Hun er derfor blevet sat fri og har fundet husly ved en Gordon, der tjener penge på illegalt sprut. Desværre er der en Robert, der gerne vil trimme organisationen ved at sætte sig på det hele. En Kipper er allerede blevet overfaldet og er nu blind. Gordon bliver slået ihejl og Evey tager hans revolver og går ud for at få hævn. Hun bliver opsnappet og fængslet. Hun bliver sat i enecelle, klippet skaldet, sultet og torteret, men afslår at fortælle noget om V, selv under trussel om henrettelse. Så hun bliver sat fri. Det har været V, der stod bag. Undervejs har Evey også fået en historie fra en medindsat Valerie. Det var ikke fup, men historien er fem år gammel og Valerie er død.
Imens fortsætter V med at fodre Adam Susan med mærkelige input via computerprogrammet "Skæbne". Slutspillet går ind og V laver bombeattentater, der lægger både "Øjet", "Øret" og "Munden" ned. Adam Susan er ved at blive skør fordi hans computerprogram er begyndt at skrive forelsket til ham. V sender en nyhedsudsendelse ud hvor han fortæller at befolkningen de næste dage ikke bliver overvåget af hverken kameraer eller mikrofoner. Og loven vil være "Gør som du lyster".
Creedy begynder at rekruttere en skyggehær. Men dens leder bliver overbudt af en opportunistisk og herskesyg kvinde fru Heyer der forsøger at spille på den vindende hest, dvs køre sin mand "Øjets" leder Conrad Heyer i stilling til at overtage magten, men alt bliver til støv. Finch undersøger videre i Larkhill, for han og Delia havde noget sammen og han ønsker at hævne hende. Imens har V stillet alle dominobrikkerne op til finalen. For sent opdager Lederens folk at V har haft adgang til "Skæbne" helt fra starten. Finch tager et lsd-trip ude på Larkhill. V viser Evey at han i modsætning til regeringen stadig kan modtage signalerne fra overvågningskameraerne. Og han har forresten også lavet store mængder gelignit. Finch finder ned i undergrundsbanen. Lederen lader sig imens hylde af en flok "begejstrede" tilskuere, hvis begejstring skyldes et geværløb i ryggen. Men Derek Almonds enke venter i mængden og skyder ham i hovedet. Conrad Hayer får en gave af V i form af en video af konen og Ally i seng sammen, hvor konen håner Conrad. Han kommer hjem og Conrad og Ally slår hinanden ihjel.
V lader sig til sidst skyde af Finch og Evey tager over. V får en vikingebegravelse i spidsen for et undergrundstog fyldt med gelignit på adressen Downing Street 10. Bogen slutter med Finch, der går ud ad en øde M1 midt i London. Ave Atque Vale. Hil Jer og Farvel.

Written in the late 1980's but set 10 years later this graphic novel tells the story of a Britain suffering under a totalitarian government which the people not only accepted but welcomed after the chaos brought on by a third world war. One man, going by the name of V, thinks it's time for change

and sets about inciting the people into wanting their freedom once again. To accomplish this requires some extraordinary acts starting with the blowing up of the Houses of Parliament. He is, of course, dressed as Guy Fawkes and remains so throughout the story. He also has a score to settle with the people who made him what he is today and the first arc of the book deals with this. It also features V's rescue of Evey, a 16 year-old girl who was about to be raped and murdered by what passes for policemen at the time. Evey remains with V in his lair until a disagreement over methods finds her abandoned and alone once more. Evey will meet up with V once again but probably not in the way she would have expected.

This is obviously a political story but it never judges the characters involved but shows how they arrived at what they were and rather asks the reader to question "what if..." "What if I had to make that decision?" "What if that was me in that position?" "What would I do?". As well as being powerful and thought-provoking, this is an intense portrayal of an extreme that we seem still to be heading towards. It is told without the use of thought balloons or caption boxes so the dialogue and the artwork must compel the narrative along and this works wonderfully. Like the tone of the story, the artwork is quite dark, the colours muted into sepia tones with lots of use of shadow. This Absolute edition includes all 10 volumes and resurrects the "silent-art" pages (full-page panels containing no dialogue) from the original series' run. We also get the original introductions by the author and artist as well as a short feature on the making of V for Vendetta entitled V: Behind the painted smile. There are also some early sketches and alternate cover artwork included as well.

Unlike the author, I did enjoy the movie version and while they do differ quite substantially I think the movie offers up a good adaptation of this original work. While they do tell a similar story there are enough differences to make it worthwhile experiencing both forms of media.

So, I've been meaning to read this for about a decade now, ever since I first saw (and enjoyed) the film. Recent events have, understandably, nudged me into dystopian fiction (and non-fiction about Nazi Germany, go figure), and I figured that now was the time to read this book, finally.

devastating nuclear war, a far-right fascist group (united with corporations) took power in England, in the name of religion, to "make Britain great again." (No, seriously, that is a direct quote.) So, yeah, except for the nuclear war part (which, I mean, honestly, given enough time...), this seems just a LITTLE familiar. It's amazing how contemporary this work feels (not just because of recent events), even though Moore started this back in the early 1980s. The technology is a little dated in the comics, to be expected, but otherwise, this story stands up very well to the test of time.

Anyway, this neo-fascist government is rounding up the gays (big surprise), the brown people (including, I am sure, the Jews), the liberals, the non-religious, the educated, the pacifists, and anyone who is viewed as an enemy of the State. Basically, if I existed in this world, I would be so fucked on so many levels (shoutout to the other non-religious, liberal, educated, pacifist, ethnically-Jewish queers out there, woo!).

I won't go too much into the plot, because the movie does follow the comics fairly well. There are some differences - I felt like there was a little more of a romantic tug between Evey and V in the movie, for example, while V is much more in father-figure and mentor territory in the comics, which I like better, to be honest. In the comics, I wonder if V isn't gay - it would make a lot of sense to me, especially since he was one of the first ones rounded up and he was surrounded by fellow political prisoners who were often there because of their sexual orientation.

But it doesn't really matter; V isn't necessarily a character - he's more than that. He's an ideal (in this case, anarchy) wrapped up in costume. We never see his face, even though Evey wrestles with wanting to see him once V is dead; she ultimately decides that by seeing his face, it would lessen his presence and words, by making him "just a man".

V, of course, isn't exactly sane; I don't think anyone would argue that he is. His actions, at times, don't seem to make sense - but, considering that he is "anarchy" personified, in a sense, I guess that is to be expected, as well. His kidnapping of Evey and torturing her, making her believe that her life is to be forfeit if she doesn't spill about everything she knows about V, is particularly troublesome. I can't imagine any SANE person wanting to do this. Evey, however, seems to eventually get over it, and even benefit from this experience.

Ultimately, I don't think anarchy is a solution like V does. People's base natures can be quite scary - look at all the anti-Semitism, racism, and just plain hate that the Drumpfster has stirred up with his rhetoric. People I used to think of as rational, friendly people morphed into people I didn't even know once Drumpf was elected - always assuring me, after their rants against gay people, Jews and non-white people, or liberals, that they didn't mean ME necessarily, even though I am all of those things. In an anarchist society, without the possibility of prison terms for killing people who aren't like them, I don't think that we, people who are "others," would be around very long. And so I don't think some anarchist utopia is an actual option - maybe V doesn't, either. He just wants to bring the current system down, into "rubble" as he calls it, and then allow people the choice of making something better, or falling back into the same patterns (as a pessimist, I know what I figure would happen in this case).

My only real problems with this collection is that the colours are rather muddled, so sometimes it is hard to tell who the characters are, because they look so similar to one another.

V for Vendetta is thought-provoking and memorable. There's a reason that it's so popular, over thirty years after it was first started as a serial. There is some seriously good stuff in this collection, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

Hopefully this all makes sense, because I am SUPER HIGH right now. LOL
