Immigrant Kids is a detailed information book about the lives of immigrant children during the second large wave of immigration, the 1890s. The book is honest and offers a realistic view of what children in the new land of 'freedom' had to endure. The promise of America often fell short for

immigrants, including immigrant kids. This important part of U.S. history is illustrated with historic photos by Jacob A. Riis and Lewis Hine.

This biography was about adults recalling thier time at Ellis Island as a child. Each chapter had a personal story from an immigrant relating to the chaper. They related to what happedend when they arrived, how they lived, how they worked, and how they went to school. There is also very good

photo's from each story.

This books lets you see how immagrants were treated and how they lived. It is good because it is from the child's point of view. It makes you think of how good you have it even if you think you don't.

This is a great non-fiction book describing the trials and tribulations of an immigrant. The focus of this book is the immigrant experience in New York City. It begins with Ellis Island processing problems and then follows them through the sweatshops and budding factories as well as the cottage

industries. A neat feature in this book is the index in the back. This could be helpful in doing research. A second feature of this book in addtition to the text, are the actual photos, that have been pulled specifically for this work. Immigrant kids would be a great addition for an upper-elementary or even a middle school.

This book is a book of photographs of children in the 1900s. The kids in these pictures were either children of immigrants or immigrants themselves. Along with all the pictures of children, this book tells about the journey immigrants made in order to live in America. It talks about Ellis Island,
Show More
the daily life of immigrant children, their schooling, their jobs, and ways that they entertained themselves. It also tells you interesting facts about immigrant life such as some children were paid $1.75 a week to deliver bread in the city and most little girls didn't play with dolls because "they were expensive, beside there was always a baby brother or sister around to play with".

The photographs in this book are really neat because they show the clothes children wore back then; they provide a look into the way life looked back then. This book is interesting because it discusses the way children lived in the early 19th century. No one I know was alive at that time, so this book shows me things I can't have ever seen or even spoken about to someone who has seen them. This book is definitely a difficult read for anyone under a 7th grade reading level, so it may need to be a read aloud. Though it can be used as just a "browse book". Even the pictures can tell stories.

In the classroom, this book can be used to show the early inhabitants of America. You can discuss how everyone came from somewhere else. Perhaps if you have a student in the class that knows of their heritage, you could have a family member talk about how their family came to America. After reading the section in the book about Ellis Island, you could talk about how a lot of families changed their names once they came to America. You could use some of your student's names to discuss changing of names and give examples of what their names may have been.

Full of interesting information, and perhaps a good book for a child to use in a traditional report-style assignment, but this book was simply not presented in a stimulating or relatable manner for young kids, at least not in my opinion. I think you would be hard-pressed to find a kid that would

ever pick this book up off the shelf just as a pleasurable read.

This books is a wonderful book that focused on kids that immigrated. Elementary students could understand and relate to this book better because of the age that this book is about. The pictures are also very interesting.

This was a book about immigrant kids that moved to New York city through out 1890-1920. Pictures showed photos from the time period. They showed pictures and described the boats coming over, reaching Ellis Island, busy NY neighborhoods, schools, child gangs, child labor. They show the cramped

quarters they lived in, and how parents tried to hold on to tradition from the old country.

make a new beginning. The book truly demonstrates the way children lived during this era. The kids worked all sorts of jobs but they were still children at heart.
Personal Reaction:
This was a very informational and interesting book to read. I loved looking at the photographs and seeing how these children truly lived during this time.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. After reading this book to my class we would have a lesson over the immigrants arriving at Ellis Island in the late 1800s and early 1900s. We would study the way the children of the immigrants lived their daily lives.

2. After reading this book to my class I would send my students home for the weekend with a homework project. The students are to go home over the weekend and gather some family photos to present to the class on Monday.

This book is about what it was like for Immigrant kids after they came to America and is filled with real pictures taken during the time. It covers the travels here and the life once they arrived. It has sections in which an immigrant shares their own experience as a child during that time. The
Show More
book can really make a kid greatful for what they have. It is great to be used with a history lesson and is accurate and powerful with its words and pictures. It could also lead into a discuss on child labor laws that followed this time.
