I was attracted to the historical premise of Jewish refugees in Shanghai during WWII. Some of the descriptions were very nice, especially the traditions of Shabbat. However, I think the plot and character arc could be stronger.

ANYA's WAR tells the story of a pre WWII Jewish girl whose family has fled Russia to Shanghai in the 1930s. The story focuses on Anya's decision to adopt a Chinese baby who is left by her mother in a crowded place. It is her compassion that keeps Anya strong, despite the prejudice her family faces

during the time of occupied Europe. She is surrounded by a close family of grandparents and parents. Despite her mother's initial reaction to her daughter's dilemma, their love and caring for the baby girl she rescues allows her story to be poignant, witty, and inspirational. Moments of this book are despairing.Anya's tenacity, determination, and courage coax us to see the beauty of everyday life, family, and the hope of survival.
