This story is about immigrants in New York in the 1930's. It talks about how everyone helped each other out and gave what they could and took what they needed. By holding these "package parties," people made it through tough times and had some joy in their lives!

Zeesie's character is very moral. When she sees her dad take eight dollars, she gives up her one dollar bill in hopes to make it right. I think reading this to younger children will help to establish a good sense of what is wrong and what is right.
