Media reviews

Perl (The Capybara Conspiracy) has created a moving coming-of-age journey steeped in Jewish traditions and comedic history, elegantly balancing humor with an honest look at the impact of suicide.

(I)t is beyond refreshing to see a story that is so thoroughly Jewish without a hint of persecution. And while bookshelves are filled with stories about children losing a family member, this novel offers something new by focusing on the unexpected loss of someone beloved but not related. An

Noah and Dash are crazy best friends who love comedy routines, and often Dash's father joins in. He's the fun parent, in Noah's eyes, and a surrogate dad to Noah since he has two moms. But when Dash's dad dies suddenly, the friendship between Noah and Dash seems broken and Noah can't understand

why. His efforts to reach out to Dash do more than fall flat -- they cause real damage. Then Noah learns that Dash's father committed suicide, which confuses him even more. The author, Erica Perl, did a great job creating a character who speaks before thinking (and even when he thinks about things he is oblivious).
I didn't particularly like the cover, nor did I think it suggested that the book would ultimately be about something as serious as suicide. I also wasn't caught up in the comedy connections, but that may just be me.
