When Roberto, his older brother and two friends attend a movie, suddenly Nazi soldiers kidnap them, taking them to labor camps.
Based on an actual happening in WWII, the author focuses on a unique aspect of Italian history wherein children were taken to work in brutal conditions to help the German
Roberto and his Jewish friend Samuele are separated from the others. Realizing the extreme vulnerability of Samuele, Roberto spends a great deal of effort protecting his friend.
This is a story of friendship, of Italian history, of the will to survive despite all odds and the desperation of the Nazi's.
While it isn't a stellar book, I do recommend it.
