The illustrations are very good and eye catching, but this is not the best book Earle Carle has done!

The very lonely firefly was about a firefly that was lost from his friends. He went searching through the night and encountered many "lights" thinking they were his friends. In the end he found his friends, after his long journey through the night.

This book was an interesting books that made the
Show More
children think because I had them point out what each thing was, as the firefly encountered it. I enjoyed reading this to the students. It was fun for them.

I would use this books while teaching about insects. I would also trace a firefly for the students and have them color it and tell me one thing the firefly encountered on his journey.

This book is not as interesting to me as the others but it is still a great book. All children love to catch fireflies in the summer so I would read this in the late spring. In the hardcover edition, on the last page, the fireflies light up so I will try to have that edition to read aloud.

Great for grades k-2. Illustrations made with watercolors. Helps kids with good character. The lonely firefly makes many errors as he looks for the group where he will really “belong.” In his search for compatible companions, he meets many other night creatures, but none is quite right—until
Show More
the happy surprise at the very end when the illustration of a swarm of friendly fireflies literally shines and twinkles a welcome in the night. Heartwarming.

This book is about a firefly that is very lonely. He flies around following different kinds of lights, thinking that they are other fireflies. At the end of the book, he finally finds other fireflies and doesn't feel lonely anymore. I would recommend this book to elementary teachers and parents.

“The Very Lonely Firefly” written by Eric Carle is a great story about a firefly searching for other fireflies. The firefly is very lonely and one night, after sun set, he went searching for fireflies. During his search, he sees many things with lights including a light bulb, a candle, and a
Show More
flashlight, but he doesn’t find other fireflies. All the things he saw were beautiful, but he was still lonely and sad. The firefly keeps searching and finds a group of fireflies at the end of the night, and he became very happy. This is a great story that I would love to read to my students in the future.

This book was a simple story about a firefly who was born in the night and flew off into the dark. He spent many nights looking for other fireflies. He flew toward everything that appeared to be another firefly. After trying several times and never finding another firefly, he began to feel
Show More
discouraged because he was lonely. Finally the fire fly found another group of fireflies and he never felt lonely again. This book is not one that I would use in my classroom, I think it is too basic and although the idea of loneliness is a good story line, I do not think the children would enjoy it.

This book is beautifully illustrated and a great addition to any classroom library. It would captivate the attention of young children. It is a work of fiction and an easy picture book.

The Very Lonely Firefly is a classic children's story about friendship and the importance of relationships. The creativity of colors and expression excite the imaginations of children. This is also a wonderful resource to use for project ideas when learning about bugs, colors, and emotions.

This is a story about a lonely firefly. The firefly is trying to find some other fireflies. The firefly keeps seeing lights so, it would fly toward the lights thinking it was other fireflies. Every time the firefly got close enough, it realized that it was something else. Finally at the end of the
Show More
story, the firefly found other fireflies, and they all became friends. This would be a really good book for a younger student to read because it has many repetitive phrases.

This book will help children understand how important it is to belong. As the firefly moves from one thing to another he continually is disappointed when he realizes its not like him. A flashlight, a lantern, eyes of an owl, lights on a car, and fireworks he continues to search until he finally

finds a group of fireflies just like him flashing their lights...happy ending...great projects that could come out of this.

This is a great, colorful, and fun book for any elementary aged student to enjoy. It is the story of a little firefly searching for other firefly friends. He cannot seem to find the right light though, until finally at the end he meets up with everyone. This would be an excellent story to
Show More
incoporate into the classroom in order to explain the importance of inclusion and friendship among one another. It has beautiful illustrations and is an easy read with the repetition it has in it.

Eric Carle always delivers in his colorful and fun stories about animals and insects. In this story, he tells the story of a very lonely firefly.

"The Very Lonely Firefly" is a great addition to Eric Carle's collection of books. It deals with the issue of finding a place to belong and wanting to belong to something. Well written, "The Very Lonely Firefly" is engaging as a lonely firefly searches for other fireflies to be with. After
Show More
mistaking several other light sources (i.e. a lightbulb, candle, flashlight, fireworks, lantern, etc.) as other fireflies, the lonely firefly finally finds what he is looking for - a group of fireflies flying around together. Eric Carle's collage work is incredible and the images are bright and vibrant.

Awesome - especially the ending!

Another beautiful Eric Carle. This one shows all kinds of different lights. At least some versions of the board book have battery-operated twinkling lights, which is a nice idea, but I'm not fond of technological enhancements to books.

A very cute story about a little firefly's quest to find friends. Great to use for an Eric Carle author study.

Fireflies and fireworks in the same book--what's not to love?!

My favorite types of books are about life lessons that can be applied to every day life! This book was no exception to this. The story begins with the introduction of a lonely firefly longing to find its friends and a place where it belongs. Throughout the story he encounters a variety of scary
Show More
situation, but through determination he finally finds where he belongs. This story is a great lesson for children to learn to never give up on themselves and that they will find who they are as they experience life.
I enjoyed the layout and the pictures throughout the story as both were fun and engaging, especially with descriptions such as "an owl, their eyes reflecting the lights."
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a fun and easy read, but would also like a lesson in never giving up and showing self determination! We all have our own place in this world and the lonely firefly finds his in the end.

The Very Lonely Firefly is a modern fantasy about a firefly who is lonely and wants to find more fireflies. Throughout his journey to find friends he comes across many other things that also produce light but are not fireflies. In the end he finds a whole group of other fireflies.

Genre: Fantasy
Reading level: K-2
Summary:
A firefly is born as the sun sets but he was all alone. So he shone his little light and set off to find someone else like him. He finds lights all over from cars and house lights, even to animal’s eyes but none are like him. All of the things that he
Show More
finds are scary and new. The lonely firefly finally finds things that look like him and he is no longer lonely.
Commentary:
In this short book, the students will find out that even the fireflies belong in groups. This opens the door for discussions that most insects are in areas where there are others like them. It also tells the students that even when there seems to be no one else like themselves, there is always somewhere they belong.
