Local notes

Box turtles are still bought as toys for children and often end up in a box in the corner of the bedroom, dehydrated and starving; a horrible fate for a noble beast who was once free to roam the entire state of Indiana. As box turtles decline in their native habitat due to human poaching and land encroachment, Felice thought it was time to share her knowledge of box turtles with others in order to keep the species going and help all box turtle owners understand how to care for their pets.

"The Turtle Lady"
Felice Roon, known affectionately as "The Turtle Lady," began her efforts to save endangered turtles and tortoises in 1973. Recognized internationally as an expert, she is consulted by zoos, veterinary schools and wildlife authorities, as well as turtle and tortoise fanciers around the country. Her devotion to distributing accurate information on the care of turtles and tortoises has led her to develop this video as an aid to others who share her goals. Her home in Sacramento, California has become what Felice terms a "hotel, hospital, hospice and orphanage" for turtles and tortoises. A portion of the proceeds of this video will go to support Felice's efforts to save these special creatures. (from the back cover)
