This book uses pigs as characters, who just "love" potatoes. The plot begins with mother cooking one potatoe for her little piglet. Shorty the piglets brother wants potatoes also, so mamma tells them they must help prepare the potatoes. Soon others are wanting potatoes also. They make potatoes for

all the pigs to eat. The only thing mamma asks from them is kiss her cheek and clear their plates.
This story reminds me a lot of my family. Once I start to make something to eat, everyone decides they want it also. This book uses a variety of concepts to tell the story. Rhyme is used to illustrate the wording. It uses numbers to count the potatoes. I choose this as modern fantasy for the element of pigs as "humanlike" characters. The illustration used is very vivid, and colorful.
An extension that could be used for this book is to bring, or have students bring potatoes to count for a recipe. Another extension is to have the students tell about an experience they have had helping in the kitchen.

Mama pig has a hungry piglet, or 2. Or 3...How many pigs are going to come ask for potatoes? A fun family snapshot, that just happens to involve counting and gentle humor.
