This book takes place in a presumably poor, alternative waterfront community; the main character, Maggie, lives in a bus. Three children in the story search for a stolen cricket and learn about loss and make a new friend who is in need of friends. I love the mix of fabric prints and watercolors the

author has put together and i love the freedom the children have to play and solve their problem without grown up help. There is a great element of forgiveness and compassion in the book as well.

At the end of the story the Pirate returned, and gave Maggie a brand new cricket and everyone became friends. This is a great story that would be suitable for Kindergarten to Fifth grade students.

saying, "The Pirate was here". Maggie was very upset so she and her friends went looking for the pirate and for Nikki. They finally found the pirate and Nikki, but Nikki died. Maggie was very upset but found out the pirate took Nikki and the cage because the pirate's dad never made anything for him and he liked the cage. When he brought Maggie the cage back, he found a new cricket and put it in there for him. This book is good to teach children that sometimes their pets die. Also, it is good to teach children that you cannot always take things without asking.

Maggie and the Pirate by Ezra Jack Keats, like his Clementina's Cactus, is a departure from his usual urban based picture books.

Maggie lives in an undisclosed tropical place. It could Florida, Southern California, Hawaii or somewhere else. To me, with the green skies, it looks like Florida. Maggie

has a pet cricket, Niki. But she and her pet are being stocked by a mysterious bully who calls himself "the pirate."

Niki is taken and Maggie in her quest to rescue her pet learns more about the Pirate. And he, in turns, learns about Maggie. But poor Niki. Somehow out of all of this, the Pirate learns about friendship and Maggie has the maturity to forgive.
