but then when he goes back home (because of course he hasn’t really run away), his family doesn’t recognize him. And when all hope seems lost, he remembers the scrubbing brush and digs it up and runs into the house and jumps in the tub and begs for a bath. And so the thing he hates is the thing that saves him. And everyone is happy. And then the last page delivers a delicious last little kick, as Harry dreams of “how much fun it had been getting dirty” and he sleeps so soundly that he doesn’t even feel the scrubbing brush he has hidden under his pillow. His attempt to solve his initial problem has led to a greater problem which he finally solves by accepting the thing he was trying to avoid in the first place. And then comes full circle, hiding the brush again. It’s just so satisfying in every way.

special place for me as a rare book that still exists in my childhood memories. It's a particularly nice memory because I related so strongly to Harry. I was a very dirty little child.

It was based on my own nostalgia that we bought it for my 2-yr-old son. He likes it, but what surprised me was my 4-yr-old daughter's reaction. She loves it, and tells me every time I pick it out, "Dad, I really like that one." I can't think of any other book she says that about.

I liked it because my family liked it. I like dogs and stories about dogs.

The Harry books are great. FUNNY plots and simple ,but engaging writing style.

The book was one of my absolute favorites as a kid, so it tickles me to no end that my three-year-old adores it as much as I did.

This book is an exciting book about all the places a dog goes to get dirty and what he does to get clean.

My copy says 1956 but this looks like it! Funny story of a dog who likes to be dirty, my kids love the illustrations most-the seem charcoal dark, and remind me of cartoon, but they are certainly full pages to look at!

This book is about a beloved family dog who goes on an adventure out of his own yard, ends up not looking like himself and has to convince his family who he is.
Great for an animal theme unit. It could also be used for a health and hygiene unit.

I can actually remember selecting this book from the library as a child. Harry the Dirty Dog is a carefree character, getting into all sorts of mischief, while still remaining lovable. This book will bring a smile to anyone's face. Highly recommended.
