In my opinion this book was a great way to introduce children to poetry. This is because the author Micha Archer, shows how Daniel can make a poem about things that he see or hears everyday. I liked this book for three reasons. First, the illustrations are vibrant and colorful. They not only

reflect the mood of the book, but keeps the audience well engaged. The colors reflect the mood of the book because it shows Daniel’s curiosity. This is because the colors almost reflect how the boy sees the world. For example, when Daniel is asking the frog his question about poetry, the pond is full of greens, blues, and yellows. Another reason I liked this book is because it used repetitive and descriptive language. This is a great example of two features commonly used in poetry. For example, Daniel ask all the animals he comes across, “What does poetry mean to you?” This line is repeated on every page of the book. The animals answer with a different answer each time, but always use descriptive language. For example, when Daniel asks the turtle what he think poetry is, the turtle responds, “I think poetry is sun-warmed sand.” This line alone hold so much imagery. Lastly, I loved the way the author ended the book. She combined all the pages in the book into one, which makes the book have meaning. It gives the audience a motivate to finish the book or go back and read it. It also teaches children how to put simple sentences together to make a great poem.

This is a poem about a young boy who discovers what poetry is in the park through nature! Each day of the week, he asks different animals "What is poetry?" And they give him their own interpretation of what poetry is. For example, the spider tells him "To me, poetry is when the morning dew

glistens." As he gets different answers, he uses them to create his own poem at the end of the book!

This story shows how poetry can mean different things to everyone. There is not exact one definition of poetry. It is all around us in different forms.

diverse picture book (poetry, nature/outdoors, city animals; preschool/kinder ages 4 and up)
* Prominently features diverse characters: Daniel appears to be of mixed ethnicity, part African-American (his dad, or someone who could be his dad, has medium-toned skin and straight black hair). The other

park-goers share varying shades of skin color.
* Could work for small groups of storytime preschoolers, but probably better suited for older kids - the text is a bit long and very poetic, so would make a nice introduction to a poetry unit. Illustrations are beautiful, though, and as a one-on-one story this is a nice quiet story to listen to and absorb.
