Description

Introduces the incredible talents of the paleoartist, whose work reanimates gone-but-never-forgotten dinosaurs in giant full-color paintings that are as strikingly beautiful as they aim to be scientifically accurate, down to the smallest detail. Follow a paleoartist through the scientific process of ascertaining the appearance of various dinosaurs from millions of years ago to learn how science, art, and imagination combine to bring us face-to-face with the past.

Explores how paleoartists bring dinosaurs to life on paper using scientific evidence. A fascinating look at a relatively unknown career, I think this book would appeal equally to fans of dinosaurs and aspiring artists. Provides excellent examples of current and historic paleoartists, demonstrating

the evolution paleoartistry as it coincides with the discovery of more specimens that provide evidence of what dinosaurs were really like. It was particularly interesting to see how much the perception of what dinosaurs might look like has changed in the last 100 years, and even in the last 30 years.

This book offers the reader a "behind the scenes" look into how scientists figure out what dinosaurs looked like. We learn about "plaeoartists", scientists who take the information from the fossils and draw pictures of what the dinosaur could possibly look like. We learn about the evolution of

dinosaur knowledge as the field of paleontology became more advanced. For example, the study of "trackways" that are found all over the world that help scientists gain insight into how dinosaurs moved. We also learn about the evolution and process of putting together the skeleton and how sometimes this is done incorrectly until someone makes a new discovery. We continue to learn about the discovery of dinosaur skin and how dinosaur's color is decided upon.

This is a wonderful book to use when teaching a science unit on dinosaurs. This book would fascinate the children, because it teaches them how we can know what dinosaurs looked like. The language used in the book may need to be scaffolded by pre-teaching vocabulary. This book would be better geared

towards older elementary students. This book did a wonderful job tying art and science together.
