BIDWELL, P., and HODGSON, N The Roman Army in Northern England (Arbeia Society, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2009)

The heart of the book is a complete gazetteer of the Roman military sites in northern England south of Hadrian’s Wall (the area sometimes known as the ‘hinterland’ of the Wall). Each site is the subject of an essay with bibliographical references and in most cases a plan. This is the first time ever that all of the military sites south of the wall have been studied together in a single volume in this way. They range from remote sites in magnificent settings, such as Hardknott Castle in the Lake District, to forts buried beneath towns and cities, as at Chestefield, Derby, Doncaster and Manchester. In addition to the gazetteer a 45-page introduction seeks to place the sites in their historical and archaeological context, using the results of the most recent research.

This was the handbook issued to delegates at the recent Roman Frontier Studies (‘Limes’) Congress held at Newcastle upon Tyne in August. A high-quality hardback of 195 pages with 76 illustrations, it can be obtained at the remarkably low price of £14 (including delivery) by writing with a cheque to: The Secretary, Arbeia Society, Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum, Baring Street, South Shields NE33 2BB.
