With Every Breath by Elizabeth Camden was a short-list nominee for the Historical Romance category of the 2015 Inspys. With its attention to historical detail, relatable characters and page-turning writing style, it is easy to see that this book is definitely a winner. I loved it and give it a

highly recommended rating.

The story takes place in Washington DC in the late 19th century. While innovation and technology are moving society ahead, there is still so much that man does not know, especially in the field of medicine. Kate Livingston, a talented statistician, and Trevor Kendall, a brilliant doctor, team up to fight TB. But their past and an unknown future may keep them from the love they both want.

Kate Livingston is a great character. Competitive and fiercely loyal, she is also controlled by her fear of loss. Her need for safety often paralyzes her emotionally. I really identified with her struggle with trusting God and could really relate to her being “tired of doubting and living in fear”. Trevor was a complex character as well, hiding insecurity and hurt behind a facade of professional coldness. I also learned a lot from this book. I had no idea of how widespread TB was and how it was a death sentence for most who contracted it. The look into early treatments is fascinating.

Camden’s writing style is excellent and made With Every Breath a pleasure to read. This one is great for fans of historical romance.

Highly Recommended.

Audience: older teens to adults.

Historical fiction

Do you ever wonder about the titles chosen for the book you are reading? Lately, I have been noticing how much the title actually tells about the novel. Tuberculosis is and was a disease of the lungs, so with every breath the person took, they were reminded

about this. Elizabeth Camden writes a captivating novel about a medical search for a cure for TB. Woven among the fascinating events we learn about some of the treatments that did not work while seeing first hand one of the ways that appeared to do the most good until an actual cure was found. I enjoyed searching with Kate and Trevor for the perpetuator of some of the slanders and rumours against them, and also felt for those gripped in the fear of the illness as well as the illness itself. Through the vivid imagination of Elizabeth I felt drawn into the story, coming up once in awhile for breath.

I received this book free from Bethany House through Emily Davis-Robinson of Nuts about Books program in exchange for an honest review. A positive critique was not required. The opinions are my own.

Page-turner of Tears, Secrets, Passion, Suspense...

Fabulous story of secrets, suspense, emotional turmoil and an uncertain love. Ms. Camden weaves a tale of two high school scholar rivals. One, Trevor McDonough, is a rich, arrogant, nerdy, Scotch immigrant. His opponent for the college scholarship
Show More
is dirt-poor Kate Norton. When Trevor wins the academic scholarship, Kate believes Trevor robbed her of her only opportunity to go to college.

Fast forward a little over a decade. Trevor has changed his last name to Kendall, has become well-respected as a doctor, and seeks out the widowed Kate to help him in his fight against tuberculosis. He knows she is attracted to a challenge, but he doesn't expect her fear, his enemies, nor his secrets to get in the way.

The book was terrific because Ms. Camden took me, the reader, on a back and forth volley of emotions, like a very exciting volleyball point. Would these two put aside their differences and find love? One minute, I was sure the answer was yes, the next it was no,and so on, until I just couldn't predict "which team would win the point." The characters were wonderfully complex, and I loved the quick, sharp repartee' between the two main characters.

Best of all, though, was the spiritual lesson underneath. Forgiveness is a choice one must make to restore relationships. Also, we can pretend to be in control, or we can acknowledge God's control, and trust Him with the unknown.

Tuberculosis has always been a terrifying disease. It must have been worse during the days before antibiotics. I loved the characters in this book and it was well researched. Sometimes I wanted to slap Kate for being so obstinate but we all have our moments. I received this book from Bookfun.org

Another good one from Camden. She truly knows how to find the obscure in history and bring it to vivid life. Her excursion into the tragic world of tuberculosis patients and their caregivers kept me spellbound. The methods tried to find a cure were at times horrifying and at others heartbreaking,
Show More
giving us a window into a disease that held the US and world petrified in the 19th century.

Three-dimensional Kate and Trevor drew the readers into their lives like they were real people were getting to know for a chat. They were full of virtues and vices, like everyday people. I especially enjoyed Trevor with his brisk and cold manner disguising such passion for a cure and a heart bigger than the capital. Kate also kept me reading with her struggle to utilize her intellect in a society that didn’t value that virtue in women.

I especially have to commend the author on her subtle use of Christian elements and thematic lessons. Learning to love through loss and the other lessons within are presented in a way that is interwoven with the overall narrative. There is no pontificating within Camden’s works; her Christian morals and teaching of her themes are very subtly presented in such a way that the reader may not even be aware they’re being taught them.

Camden is among my favorite Christian historical fiction/romance writers. She creates such unique stories and makes her characters come to life. The Christian elements are always quieter than others in this genre in such a way that non-Christians like me are able to enjoy the story to the hilt without cringing from heavy-handed preaching. Definitely a keeper by this author and I look forward to indulging in other works by her.

With Every Breath, a novel by Elizabeth Camden is an excellent story that captivates the reader from beginning to end. The main characters in the book with their rivalry, frailties, desires and passions both romantic and intellectual, are very believable. The early treatments for the illness of

tuberculosis is very sad with regard to what patients had to endure in addition to their illness. The book is an excellent story and much deserving of the five star rating given here. This book is highly recommended as a very good read.
