best. Her employer is less than enthusiastic that he has hired a female let along a “cripple” as he calls her. Lillian determines to earn her place and refuses to give up. She notices some irregularities in the supply of a certain drug. Why does the pharmacy need so much of this particular drug? This is a mystery Lillian is determined to solve. She also has gained the attention of her brother’s best friend much to her annoyance. She thinks Arch Vandenberg can’t really be interested in her. He must just feel sorry for her, right? Can she trust Arch after her former boyfriend hurt her so badly?
Arch Vandenberg is an Ensign in the Navy who has been assigned Boston as his port. He is happy about that as it will give him a chance to get to know Lillian Avery better. He is drawn to her like no other. She isn’t interested in him for his money, his family connections or his social standing. She really isn’t interested in him at all! He plans to pursue her though and show her what kind of man he is. He is still struggling with anxiety after surviving an attack on his ship at sea, seeing men killed and watching his ship sink. He notices other men struggling too, but they get some medicine to help them. However, the medicine’s side effects seem to hamper their senses; they appear almost drunk. Is Lillian’s pharmacy giving his men too much medicine or the wrong kind of medicine or what exactly is going on?
Once again Sarah Sundin entertains with this great WWII romance. What I also liked about this one was the mystery element added to keep the plot interesting. It is obvious that the author has done her research because it shows in the detailed descriptions of life during this time period, which I really like as it kept me engaged in the plot and characters. I liked Lillian’s spunkiness and persistence. I enjoyed reading about Arch and Lillian learning that Christ is their anchor in the storms of life. He is the one we must cling to as the storms rage. Only He will hold us firm and fast. This is another wonderful story from the pen of Sarah Sundin. I can’t wait for book three due to be released in the spring of 2017 in the series when readers get Quintessa’s story!

For a romance featuring the Greatest Generation, your must-read author is Sarah Sundin. With the perfect blending of historical detail, complex characters and well-crafted story, Anchor in The Storm is another recommended read. Sarah’s novels just keep getting better and better!

Storm again takes place in Boston in the early days of WWII. The Navy is struggling to perform its duties amidst the terror of the German U-Boat. Sarah’s historical research is spot-on as she creates a world readying for war. Old and new characters are featured in the novel with the story focusing on Lillian Avery and Arch Vandenberg. Lillian and Arch are not your typical romantic characters. Lillian is an amputee in a day when she is labelled crippled. Arch suffers from PTSD, something that even in today’s modern world is at best misunderstood and at worst ignored or denied. Both struggle with the perceptions of others and this affects their emotions and actions in almost every way. They try to overcome hardship and fears through their own power, ignoring the strength that God provides in weakness. The plot contains elements of mystery and suspense that kept me turning the pages and drew the characters closer together. Yay! — history, mystery and romance all in one volume!

Sarah always weaves a message of faith and hope in her novels. In Anchor in The Storm, characters and readers are reminded that Jesus is the anchor of their lives in the midst of any storm. While life today may not be like that of 1942 America, uncertainty and anxiety still make their way into our lives. I needed to hear that message again. Viewing disability through the eyes of those in this story was sometimes painful. No politically correct responses here! But it made me think of those unspoken views that I may hold when coming face to face with those different from me. Bravo, Sarah, for making me rethink my own reactions and perceptions.

Anchor in The Storm exceeded my expectations, making this novel my favorite so far from a very talented author. So if you are looking for a book to take you away, then look no further! Please note: Anchor in The Storm is book 2 in the Waves of Freedom series. It is not necessary to read book 1, Through Waters Deep, first, but I would recommend you do just that. This is a great series — you won’t want to miss any part!

Highly Recommended!

Audience: older teens to adults.

I should state that I’ve read every one of the author’s books that I could get my hands on, and loved them all. That being said this book is no exception, once you pick it up, your gone page turning.
We are back with some dear friends that we met in Through Waters Deep, and get reacquainted, and
Show More
was happy to see Mary and Jim’s relationship moving forward. Jim’s friend Arch who we also met, and wasn’t sure if I really cared for him, but he seemed changed, and he becomes interested in Jim’s sister Lillian.
If you remember Lillian was injured as a child and lost her leg, and because of that she has been ridiculed and hurt by people, an x-boyfriend who said he loved her, and even her twin sister. Now Arch also has a chip on his shoulder, and he is leery of all woman gold diggers, or so he thinks.
This book brings face to face with U-boats off our coast, and dealing with the aftermath of battle fatigue, and how our soldiers were able to deal with the nerves.
There are some really sad happenings here, a drug ring, murder, and prying on our sailors. You will never see most of what happens here coming; I was very surprised at all who are involved, and I guess good old greed is to be blamed.
We see action in the seas, and a bit of romance, and a lot of heartache, as we meld into everyday life in 1942 Boston, MA. Once you pick this one up you will not regret it, and the next book is coming out next spring, the only time I really wish time would move faster.
I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

This was one of my favorite books by Sarah Sundin. I loved the characters. I did not want to put this book down or for it to end. Arch and Lillian were great together even when they were fighting. Was Lillian going to be able to remain a pharmacist or was she going to fail? Besides being female,

she had a prosthetic leg. Arch was wondering if he would survive the war. This story was well blended with romance and intrigue. I received this book from Revell for a fair and honest opinion.

My Review:
Lillian Avery finally sees her life take off. She has been accepted as a pharmacist in Boston! Amid war and the lack of qualified male pharmacists, she has been selected. When she arrives for her first day, her employer at Dixon's Drugs keeps her initially behind the counter because of what he sees as a detriment to his business. Her prosthesis showing beneath her dress hem.

Lillian's life brightens as she is beckoned to play her elderly neighbor's piano. Soothing music floats through the sitting room as her heart heals ~ from unease, uncertainty, and her acceptance being questioned. Strains fill the air, and her heart. Away from home for the first time beyond college, her trepidation lifts as she is soothed. Mrs. Harrison's welcome has done wonders in a bleak day, as she set the sheet music before Lillian. Wisdom of a friend.

Her brother Jim and his long-time friend, Archer Vandenberg, are stationed out of Boston, assigned aboard the US Navy destroyer warship, the USS Ettinger. It is helpful to have her brother nearby when they come ashore. Lillian is not too sure about any attachment with Arch, although he frequently comes along.

Lillian questions the quantity of habit-forming sedatives in stock at the pharmacy, prescribed in unusual large doses at a time. Mr. Dixon isn't concerned about it. When does your job as pharmacist become detective work because of conscience?

Building friendships and bonding together bring stresses beyond war. Those aboard the Ettinger are on alert for the next mission, with lives in peril. Some businesses are choosing not to follow black-out, to not lose customers, making those at sea easier targets as they patrol. Exhaustion and the need for keen awareness bring to light other difficulties.

The characters are well-developed. The story progresses amid the internal setting of World War II. I enjoy reading Sarah Sundin's series. Although this is book 2, it can be read as a standalone novel without feeling like you are lost in the story. Author Sarah Sundin works on-call as a hospital pharmacist. This storyline within her profession will be first-hand for Lillian.

Book Review: Anchor in the Storm Anchor in the Storm is sweet and lovely read. I felt like I was in the story and I felt bad for Lillian and Arch. What will they endure together?

Sarah Sundin put you through the emotions with all her stories, but this one had me with my emotions after a chapter.

Lillian finds out her brother is missing after an attack on his Navy ship "Atwood".

Are you a fan of Historical Fiction or do you enjoy reading about World War Two? This book has that feel to it. I enjoy learning about how we got into World War 2.

Lillian wants to be a druggist and a female one at that. In an era that is still new to the world with female having jobs. We are at the beginning of World War Two. The story starts out December 7, 1942, or around that time.

Arch is on leave time from the Navy. He has to deal with his troubles. Will they find love together and find out they need to open up and trust god first.

Arch seems to annoy Lillian and Lillian needs to prove herself. When they get to Boston something is up with her new job. They're a lot of perceptions for sedatives. Could there be a drug ring? Arch is dealing with it though the Navy's end for he sees it going on with his men. Is there a romance in the air?
