The story takes place in 1878, with two U.S. Army soldiers discovering a woman hidden in a cellar. This woman, Laina Gray, must slowly recover from the horrible treatment she received from the man that was killed by Indians, while she was kept in a cellar as his property. Granny Max, who works at

the fort washing laundry, will take Laina in and help her learn to trust people again. Granny is a lady who is old, and full of wisdom and has a very close relationship with her God.

Then there is the soldier who found Laina, Nathan Boone. He is a bitter and grieving young man trying to heal his broken heart, from having his wife die several years ago. There is also a couple of new recruits who join the regiment and one is not who he says he is. Can he break away from his past and become a man worthy of people's trust? This is a story that centers around Laina mostly, and how each of these characters come to have an impact upon her life. It seemed very realistic and showed the tragedies and triumphs in people's lives. I look forward to reading more in this series.
