The author uses poetry to describe the quiltmaker's of Gees Bend Alabama. Gives a peek into their lives beyond quiltmaking- family life, historical events, civil rights. Beautiful, colorful illustrations.

The art in this picture book is what raises it above the average - rich thick color on canvas. Each page has a dominant color which makes It really resonate with the idea of a patchwork quilt. The story was lovely and could have succeeded quite well outside of its poetic presentation; I'm not sure

why the author chose to tell it this way instead of in prose. The poetry aspect makes the story non-linear and perhaps inaccessible to younger children.

This beautifully illustrated children's book is full of history. It is narrated by a little girl living in Gee's Bend, an area famous for their hand-made quilts. This book explores the culture of quilting- generations of women bonding while creating masterpieces out of reused fabric pieces.

The

I was able to see an exhibition of the quilts from Gee's Bend a number of years ago and they have stuck very strongly in my memory. This book does a great job in connecting the lives of the women who made those quilts and the struggles they faced.

This book would be perfect for a library program
Show More
centered around quilting. The children could be read this book and then learn the basic techniques of quilting then come together to make a small quilt for display in the library.

This book teaches a lesson about the simple things, like family tradition. The speaker tells the story of herself and her relatives. As a child, she has never made her own quilt. It's something that her family has been doing for generations, and over the course of the book, she gets to make and
Show More
finish her first quilt.
Children that read something like this can become curious about a hobby that they never thought about, and they can see the strong family bond that can come from it.

This is a story that teaches traditions and culture. It is always wonderful for children to know what their family members did before them. It teaches character and many more things. Great book for younger readers.
