Description

As an elderly woman, Lillian recalls that her great-great-grandparents were sold as slaves in front of a courthouse where only rich white men were allowed to vote, then the long fight that led to her right--and determination--to cast her ballot since the Voting Rights Act gave every American the right to vote.

Loved this metaphorical picture book about the journey for African Americans to get the right to vote. The pictures are lovely and text will inspire a lot of conversation about the voting rights movement, which continues today.

In a symbolic journey up a long steep hill, 100-year-old Lillian heads to vote, recalling with each step the history of oppression that led to this moment: great-great grandparents sold on the auction block, her great grandfather enslaved and picking cotton. Powerful words and powerful images trace

the voting rights from the 15th amendment in 1870 that allowed Lillian’s great grandpa but not grandma to vote to the steps backward when poll taxes and impossible-to-pass literacy tests were imposed, and to the protest march from Selma to Montgomery. This stirring tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 should be shared every election season to impress on the young the hard-earned right to vote.

Rich in history and truth, Lillian's Right to Vote gives elementary grades a look into the struggle African Americans, as well as women, faced to be able to vote. This book inspires us to not take that privilege for granted.
