I prefer BOLD images in my picture books -- and I really like rhyming stories. This means Evie will probably like the total opposite of that. Lenny & Lucy is that book. The illustrations are lovely, though muted with grays, golds, and blues.

The story is very sweet. A boy

and his dog move to a new neighborhood in the woods and create two new friends to help protect them. It could've used a little more...something. So not my favorite picture book.

When Peter and his father move to a new house in the woods, Peter is confronted with emotions familiar to any child who has moved away from a home they loved. Fear, loneliness, and uncertainty meet Peter as the dark woods across the bridge to his new house threaten him. With only his dog to keep

him company, Peter uses his creativity and imagination to adjust to his new situation. This book provides a wonderful platform for readers who have moved to relate and begin to understand their own emotional experience.

A story about moving from the point of view of a child

The best part of this book is the way the illustrator, Erin E. Stead uses color. Mostly grey pencil, Stead slowly weaves color into the story to introduce new characters, and slowly bring life to a difficult time for Peter.

Peter and his family move to a new house next to the woods. Peter confides in his dog Harold that he liked the old house better. He sets to building Lenny, a guard against the scary woods. Then he worries that Lenny will be lonely, so he builds him a companion named Lucy as well.

A short an easy to read story about fear, especially related to change. In order to get over come his fears of the dark forest, Peter creates some large scare crow like beings whom he names Lenny and Lucy to make him feel safe. Through this he becomes friends with Millie his neighbor. This book

would make a fun read aloud story because it is imaginative and innovative.

As the publisher says on the verso, the story is about Peter moving and "making friends," which he does quite literally. He and his father are also befriended by their neighbors. The illustrations tell a lot that is unmentioned in the text. So, a much cleverer and even stranger book than it seems

at first reading and viewing.
Oh, and maybe Lenny is a projection of Peter, who worries that Lenny may be feeling as lonely as Peter probably is. Interesting that the companion Peter creates is female.
