Who was Walt Disney, is a fun interactive biography that attracts kids without all of the seriousness of a real biography. There are many pictures within this book that accompanies the information that is simply written for children to understand. The book is divided into small chapters which makes
Show More
it easier for older children to read

I absolutely loved this book for a couple of reasons. I found the writing extremely engaging and interesting, and a little humorous too. For example, the author tells us the time that Walt Disney painted pictures on the white house he lived in with black tar. The characters, Walt Disney himself,
Show More
were extremely believable. Children can relate to him when the author said that he lived on a farm for most of his childhood. Those who live on a farm can relate to all of the happiness and excitement that Walt Disney experienced when he lived on this farm. The big idea of this story is to give the reader a background of Walt Disney and how the small town that he lived in can been seen in the layout of Disney World.

Transitional chapter book FULL of information and history. Great early non-fiction book with enough information to support a writing assignment.

Summary: This book was meant to portray Walt Disney's life. It starts from the time he was born, to his parents' death, all the way until he dies. It talked about the kind of student he was in school and how his love of drawing was born.

Personal Reaction: I didnt particularly like this certain
Show More
biography. It says on the cover that it is not authorized, liscensed or endorsed by Walt Disney Company or any affiliates. It was probably just a bad choice on my part, but I didn't see the notice on the cover until I was already halfway through. It didn't go into very good details, it just seemed to barely touch on a lot of different things. It almost made it awkward to read.

Classroom Extension: You would have to check to make sure the information was credible, but you could definitely use this book to teach about Walt Disney because it touches on so many different parts of his life.

Characters: Walt Disney, Herbert, Raymond, Roy, Ruth, Elias, Aunt Margaret, Russell Maas
Setting: Chicago, Missouri,
Theme: Informative, historical figure
Genre: biography
Summary: This book explores the life of Walt Disney. It begins by explaining his early years of life. Disney was a class clown.
He once caught a mouse in the field and tied a strong on it and brought it to class as his pet. Disney was born in Chicago but soon after the town became rough and his family moved to Missouri. Walt loved his new home, he would ride pigs around town. Disney enjoyed fishing, Skinny-dipping, sledding, skating, drawing, and entertaining. The book goes through the events that eventually lead him to create Disney company and Disneyland.
Audience: Children
Curriculum: History, motivation
Personal Response: The book was very interesting and provided great illustrations. I didn’t think it was appropriate to include skinny-dipping in the list of activities he liked during his childhood. I could see a young child asking what it is. I also liked that the book provides a timeline. This is a great opportunity to teach a child at a young age what a timeline is and how they work. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.

If you ever wondered about the man behind Mickey Mouse, this is the book to read. The book tells about the ups and downs of his life, and where the magic began. Reading this book gives you a special connection to him, and he characters he made. I could read it again and again.

This story tells about the life of Walt Disney and his characters. The book includes many interesting facts, such as the fact that early Mickey Mouse was actually a mean character and that Donald duck was created because Mickey was becoming a heroic figure. Also the book explains certain aspects
Show More
about the Disney franchise. Walt Disney loved Peter Pan and he played it for the school play. It would only make sense that the Disney franchise would turn Peter Pan into a movie. This story also showed aspects of Walt Disney's childhood. Walt Disney was raised on the farm and enjoyed the farm life. This story shows the funny and interesting life of Walt Disney.

Who Was Walt Disney? Is a short biography of the famous cartoonist Walt Disney, written by Whitney Stewart. This chapter book begins with the story of Walt as a young boy whose antics included him finding a field mouse and walking it into the classroom on a string leash. This class clown would
Show More
later be known for a very different, very famous, mouse. The story takes you through Walt’s life, beginning with his childhood on a farm in Missouri to his creation of Mickey Mouse. This is a very informative biography that takes it a step further for children by dedicating pages explaining past events and concepts such as the great depression and the steps of animation.

Classroom Extensions:
1. I would give this to my students who are having a hard time with reading biographies. This book is a great way to get a child interested.

2. I would have my students pick a famous person and create a biography on that person to share with the class.

I thought that this book was a great biography because of the way that the information was presented and also the illustrations that were used throughout. When explaining important historical events or people that impacted Walt Disney's life, there was a box on the next page or someone on the same
Show More
page that explained in more detail what they were talking about. For example, when Charlie Chaplin is mention there is a box on teh next page that tells you who he is and what he is famous for. SImilarly when the book mentions the great depression there is a box on the next page that gives the reader information about it. I thought that this was a really good way to help children who might not be familiar with these subjects to still be able to understand the book adn what they are talking about. The Illustrations that were in the book were also really good and helped to visual what the story was talking about. There were maps when talking about places or drawings of people that were talked about in the story. I felt that this was a good way to help the children visual what they are reading about while also not giving them so many words to read. I thought that this book was a great way to learn about Walt Disney and all of his contributions to the world while also showing readers that it is ok to be a little different than every one else and to follow their dreams just like Walt did.

This is a terrific book full of information about Mr. Walt Disney's life. It starts by describing him as a child and his journey to school with a mouse he found...then leads to the man who created the most famous mouse of all, Mickey. The book contains various exerts from other people besides the
Show More
author about Walt, who he was, his life and things that he had done which helps in painting the picture of Walt Disney's life. It also contains a map to show the areas they discuss in the book making it easier for kids to relate and visualize the information being discussed. It is a great book with wonderful illustrations and lots of information describing a very famous man that is behind the most famous children's movies and theme parks. It is written and presented in a way that is easy for children to read and understand and I feel the layout helps to grap children's attention and interest.

Classroom Extension: Use this book as an example and have the children write their own short story and timeline to illustrate a famouse persons life of their choice.

This biography is about Walt Disney one of the most iconic producers ever. This biography will take you through his life from his life as a boy where he didnt pay much attention in class and would daydream. To the iconic man that everyone knows. It talks about how much of a family man he was and
Show More
the love he had for children and grandchildren. The biography also talks about disney movies.

This is a great biography for young readers so that they can have a little more insight into Walts life. Almost all children have heard about disney movies and I would hate to hear them not know anything about the man who created the disney empire.

Have the kids draw their favorite disney movie covers or characters

A book about Walt Disney, who he was, what he did, and how he made an influence on the world.

Who was Walt Disney? was a biography about the life and achievements of Walt Disney, the great cartoonist we all know and love. It’s provided insight on Walt Disney’s life and how he came to be one of the most well known people in the world. The purpose of the book being to inform older
Show More
children about Walt Disney.
I liked this book and feel it achieved its purpose very well. My favorite thing about the book was the layout. The chapters were fairly short and in the beginning of every chapter there was a title that gave way to what part of Disney’s life this was going to be about. For example when Disney goes to Hollywood, the chapter was called Hollywood. I liked this because as a reader if I was reading this for a book report it might be easy when writing my report to go right to the chapter of Disney’s life I needed information on. I also loved that there were hand drawn pictures on the page something you normally don’t see in chapter books. I thought this really helped to move the story along and help the reader to understand Disney’s life better.
One of my favorite things about the layout of this book was the additional information provided in the book. Throughout the book when something that involved history or something the reader wouldn’t be able to understand was mentioned, the author provided a little blurb of additional information on the same or next page. For example when discussing Charlie Chaplin, the author provided information on the next page about whom Charlie Chaplin was and his significance during that time period. I really enjoyed this because it helped to develop a better understand of events in Disney’s life and make sense of what was being discussed.
Another thing I liked was that in the back of the book, the author provided a timeline of Disney’s life so the reader could have yet another visual way to understand the events in Walt Disney’s life. I liked this because it provided a way to inform the reader and it helped me to understand the order of the events in which things occurred.
A final thing I enjoyed about this book that didn’t involve layout was the language. The language was very detailed and provided a deeper understanding of Walt Disney. An example of this is when the author was discussing how Walt Disney’s mother died and he never forgave himself for that. The language made the reader really understand Disney’s pain. It also said it in a way an older child could understand. Overall helping the book to achieve its big idea, which was to inform the reader about Walt Disney.

In my opinion this is a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book because I have always admired Walt Disney and it was great to learn new things about him. I really liked how the author started the book with Walt’s childhood and ended with his death. A lot of the books I have read on
Show More
Walt Disney have all been about Mickey Mouse and Disney World. Another thing I liked about this book was the pictures. They were simple but they fit the book perfectly, for example, when the illustrator drew a picture of Walt and his family, the expressions on their faces represent their personality. Walt’s dad Elias was always mean and nasty and rarely took pleasure in anything, so in the family picture Elias’s face reflects his personality.
The big idea in the book is to never let anything keep you from following your dreams. Growing up Walt was always told he would never add up to much and he wouldn’t make a name of himself. However, Walt followed his dreams and is now one of the most famous people in the whole world.

Summary: "Who Was Walt Disney?" is a biography about Walt Disney from his time growing up in Marceline, Missouri to opening the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California. When Walt was a child, his family moved around a lot. In school, Walt was labeled by one of his teachers as "the second dumbest in
Show More
the class". This never bothered Walt, however, due to his drive to be successful. His love for drawing cartoons turned into him creating one of the most widely recognized cartoons ever, Mickey Mouse.
Review: I am a big fan of Disney which is one of the reasons why I picked this book up. Even with this, there were a few things I learned after reading this book. What I particularly liked about this book was the timeline in the back. For every year that something happened in Disney's life, there was something that was happening around the world. This is a very neat addition.

Summary
This is a biography about Walt Disney from boyhood to the creator of Walt Disney World. The book describes Walt’s childhood in Missouri and how even then he would catch field mice and parade them around in his school classroom. Walt was always drawing and his proudest possessions were his
Show More
crayons. Walt was a newspaper carrier and did so to help his family. In school Walt always had a hard time paying attention and was at one time called by a teacher the “second dumbest” in the class. The Disney family was always moving so that enabled Walt to see much of the country. He began to study animation and soon left to go to Hollywood to get his cartoons on the big screen. In 1923 he created Mickey Mouse. From there Walt Disney went through many ups and downs in his career but eventually became the legendary man he is known for today.

Personal Reaction
I thought this book was a great easy to read informative biography. This was a perfect, no nonsense approach that is perfect for a student searching for material to write a paper, or to just get valuable information on Walt Disney. The author kept all the information in order of Walt’s life and was easy to keep up with. Although this book doesn’t have much of an exciting plot or storyline it provides exactly what the reader of this book would be looking for in a biography. The book also has descriptive chapter outlines so that a reader can skip around in the book if only certain information is needed. Overall this book was informative and useful for what it is written for.

Classroom Extension
1. This book would be a great resource for an activity called a “boo-ography”. This activity involves students selecting a famous person from history and doing research on them and then presenting the information to the class as that person. The students dress up as the character for the presentation and delivers the content as the person as if they were still alive.
2. Another extension for this book could be for students to practice identify valuable information when reading nonfiction. Pages from the book could be copied and handed out to students to circle or underline the pertinent information on each page.

This book was about Walt Disney’s life. He grew up in Missouri with his four siblings. The story takes you through his life as a boy in to an adult . As a child, he didn't pay much attention in class instead he would daydream or draw. Walt was a class clown. He caught a mouse in the field and

tied a string on it and brought it to class as his pet. In 1917, he moved with his family to Chicago. Walt dropped out of high school to join the army but was too young.. Instead, he joined the Red Cross and was sent to France for a year to drive an ambulance. When he returned home, he started taking night classes at Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. He started working on animation and made the decision to move to Hollywood. Walt along with his brother made Disney Studios. Later it was named Walt Disney Studios. Walt made very popular characters such as Mickey Mouse and Snow White. He made Disney Land in 1955. Walt married his wife and had two children. He passed away in 1966 due to Lung caner. After his Walt's death, Walt's brother carried on the plans to finish the Florida theme park, which opened in 1971 under the name Walt Disney World.

My Reaction:
I thought this was a great bibliography. I love Disney movies and it was interesting to learn about the man who created it.

Classroom Extension:
1. In the classroom, I would show one of the classics movies like Snow White or Mickey Mouse.
2. Have the students draw an animation and then show the class and explain it.

Summary: This book is about the always fun Walt Disney. It's a story of his life from the start to end. It has facts about his life when he lived on his family farm in Missouri as a child, when he was an ambulance driver in France in World War I, and how he started Disneyland.

Personal Reaction: I
Show More
loved this book, mainly because I love everything Disney. I have never been to Disneyland or Disney World, but I think it would be amazing to go. I think any young child would love to read this, even though the pictures are in black and white.

Classroom Extension Ideas:

2) We could make up our own new Disney characters
3) We could write letters to our favorite Disney characters and see if they will write us back.

Summary: This book was about Walt Disney’s life. It started off with an introduction on who Walt was; he grew up in Missouri with his four siblings. Walt didn’t start school until he was seven years old because his family was too busy working on the farm to take him. In school Walt drew more
Show More
than he paid attention, but he loved performing so his teachers would let him dress up and perform events the students were learning about. Walt’s family moved to Kansas City when he was nine years old and he started selling newspapers. In 1917, the Disney’s moved to Chicago where Walt dropped out of high school. However, Walt took night classes at Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Walt ended up driving ambulances in France during World War 1. When he returned home, he moved back to Kansas City and began working on animation. Eventually, Walt headed to Hollywood. There him and his brother made Disney Brothers Studio, which eventually turned into Walt Disney Studios. Walt met and married Lillian Bounds in 1925. During this time he created Mickey Mouse and had two children. In 1937, he made Snow White and in 1955 he created Disney Land. Walt passed away from lung cancer in 1966. However, his friend carried out his dream of opening Walt Disney World in Florida in 1971.

Review: I thought this book had a lot of information on Walt Disney’s life. The main message was to give the reader a better understanding of who Walt Disney was. The author added details about Walt’s personal life throughout the book and even added some of the not so great things Walt did, like sell war souvenirs that weren’t actually authentic. The book also had pages that allowed the reader to find out what was going on in the world at this time. For example, one page talked about the Great Depression. In the back of the book there was also a time line that gave important events of Walt’s life and on the other side there were events on what was going on in the world during that year. I thought this was a great way to give readers an idea on what was happening during Walt’s life. Overall, I thought this book was very informative, it allowed readers to see how stressful his job was at certain times. At one point the book said that he needed to go on a vacation and get away with his wife because he was too stressed. It made Walt seem like a whole person who had his battles he had to face during his life and that the process of creating Mickey Mouse and Disneyland was not that easy.
