Raindrops are shown in photographed photos to display the beauty of nature, the importance of rain, and how insects and other animals adapt to this weather condition.

From the initial smell of the storm through the sun coming out again and the rain drying up, this book shows, through beautiful photography and very simply text, the process rain takes.

This is a beautiful book with close up photos of rain and raindrops on leaves, flowers, and animals. The text is

very short, often just a few words per page. At the end there are a few pages of additional information about rain and where to go for more information. The children enjoyed the book. I think this would be better for children to explore on their own. Using it as a read aloud doesn't allow time for the children to truly appreciate the photography.

Along with the yearly winner and six Honor Books the Orbis Pictus committee also chooses up to 8 books as Recommended Books every year. Raindrops Roll is a 2016 Orbis Pictus Recommended Book. Raindrops Roll by April Pulley Sayre, who is both the author and photographer, is a photo-illustrated

nonfiction picture book. It is recommended for children ages 4-8 years old or preschool through third grade. What I love the most about this book are the photos. They are absolutely breathtaking and capture the beauty of raindrops in an up close way that I had not seen before. I think that this book definitely encourages its readers to get out in nature and take a closer look at what happens when it rains. The words are simple and poetic and go hand-in-hand with the photographs and most importantly leave the reader with plenty of time to look closely at the photos. At the end of the book is a two page, in depth, well-written science lesson called “A Splash of Science”. It covers the science behind each page and photo in the book.

Lovely poetry and detailed nature photography will invite young readers to carefully inspect the wet world around them. As is frequently the case, I find myself wishing that the backmatter had been incorporated into the main text in some way. The main text is a poetic exploration of rain; the

backmatter is a nonfiction book about the water cycle.
