A boy in Ancient Egypt travels with his father on the Nile to attend his first day of school. This interesting book which mentions several of the gods of Ancient Egypt is an interesting addition to a growing collection of children's books published by Eerdmans. The research notes at the end of the
Show More
book provide further information to help readers (and teachers) with this book rooted in ancient history. The accompanying illustrations are well-done. The glossary will be a helpful addition for younger readers not familiar with many of the terms. I received an advance e-galley of the book for review purposes through NetGalley.

Beautifully illustrated story about a young boy in ancient
Egypt who leaves his peaceful country life to go to school in the big city. A good story for a young person feeling anxious about starting school for the first time.

This is the tale of Khepri, the young Egyptian son of a fisherman, on his way to his first day of school. The story is sweet, and the illustrations are lovely. At the end of the book, there is a brief glimpse at the history of writing and education in ancient Egypt. The book also contains a helpful

glossary of terms which may be unfamiliar to young readers. Though the publisher recommends this book for children 5 to 9, I'd actually recommend it for a bit older children. I think this would be an excellent addition to any lesson on ancient Egyptian history.

This is a beautifully produced book, the story is interesting, almost poetic and the illustrations are lush and inviting. A very pretty book, as soon as I finished it I gave it to my grandsons I believe they will enjoy it very much.

This story of a young boy going to school for the first time is gorgeously illustrated. The book is set up nicely to highlight the artwork with only a few sentences per two-page spread. Although it seems like not much is written, the language is rich with description and feeling. The last few pages

My daughter loved this book! She always had trouble going to school because she missed me too much and she felt a connection to the little boy in this story. The illustration is beautiful and I recommended this to all my friends with children. I've even told my daughters teacher about it. We loved

it! Thank you for this great story.

A lyrical, enchanting picture book which follows a young boy on his journey to school in ancient Egypt. The themes (facing the unknown, longing for the familiar) are instantly recognizable and relatable. A great book for kids starting school, and a fascinating exercise in bringing ancient history

alive for children.

This is a beautifully illustrated book. I loved the rich colors in the pictures. While I enjoyed the story, and the unique twist on starting school, my son, who is five, had trouble keeping his interest on the story. Some of the words used are too advanced for a 5 year old.

The opening words of this book had me hooked. "We wake in the still darkness of a day unlike all others. I roll up my mat, and my heart swoops like a falcon in this new day, the first day of school."

Isn't that imagery just beautiful? You can feel the uncertainty, excitement, and even trepidation of

this young boy.

This is a story of a boy setting out on his first day of school to become a scribe in the New Kingdom of Egypt. The story is beautifully illustrated. The pictures are appealing to the eye and give the feel of Egypt.

There is a more non-fiction section in the back giving more information about school in ancient Egypt.

This is a great book for grammar age/elementary students studding ancient history or Egypt. However, this book will remain in my library even as my children grow out of it.

(I received a free copy of this book for a review. This review is my honest opinion.)
