are illustrated in this book. The publishers tells about Martin Luther King’s family and included fun facts that some readers may not have been aware of. For example, his name, as well as his father’s name was originally Michael. His father changed their names to Martin. At the end of the story, the memorial statue of him in Washington, D.C. is pictured with printed words to remind readers of who Martin Luther King, Jr. was in history.

Personal Reaction:
This biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. is an easy book to read. The pictures used to illustrate the different marches, boycotts, “colored” and “white” entrances into buildings are vivid, clear, and detailed. There are a lot of facts in the book I was not aware of. I am traveling to Washington, D.C. this summer to take my son on a tour of the white house and all of the monuments. The memorial statue at the end of the book is one of the many monuments I want my son to see.

Classroom Extension Ideas: 1.) Provide journals for each student. After reading the story have students reflect on what they learned and connections they made between their life and the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
2.) Create a class book on Martin Luther King, Jr. In the book place pictures and articles on Martin Luther King, Jr. At the back of the book, reserve a few pages for students to write down their ideas on how they can add to his dream and continue to change the world.
