In "ABC, I Like Me", three animals and their friends tell a story about self esteem. Each animal gives their own reasons as to why they love themselves. Each characteristic that the animals state corresponds with a letter in the alphabet.

Although the plot and illustrations are simple, the book
Show More
possesses a deeper meaning. The self-esteem theme of the book will appeal mostly to young children who may feel as though they are not special. I recommend this book to anyone.

The teacher could assign a letter to each student. The students would then use that letter to describe themselves in a positive way. Older students could create an acrostic poem using the entire alphabet describing themselves or a specific topic.

In this book, animals use the letters of the alphabet to tell why they like themselves. One word that the animal uses to describe his or herself begins with a letter of the alphabet. For example, the first page shows a pig jumping in the air exclaiming "I am Awesome".

I am just beginning to
Show More
experience how diverse ABC books really are. I think this book is really neat because it deals with self-esteem. This book isn't just for teaching the alphabet, it can help kids feel special. At least one page has a phrase that every kid will be able to recognize as a phrase that describes them too. This book is also great because the illustrations are simple, yet vibrant. They will easily catch any child's eye.

In a classroom, I would have children make a new page for the book. They could draw a picture of themselves and use a letter to tell one reason why they like themselves. I might also assign children a letter and a partner and have them describe something about their buddy using the assigned letter. This activity would allow for community/classroom building.

This book is a bibliotherapy book that uses the ABC's to help build self-esteem in children. It has fun colorful pictures and words and a fun flow to it which engages children's attention and helps them think about things they like about themselves. Would be used for a K-1 class room. Great for

lessons about self esteem and getting children engaged in finding things they like about themselves and appreciating those things.

ABC I Like Me! by Nancy Carlson is the follow up to I Like Me! Harriet and I haven't read the original book so I can't comment on how well ABC I Like Me! complements the original.

ABC I Like Me! is an alphabetical list of positive messages. Harriet liked listing off the letters of the alphabet but
Show More
was disinterested in the rest of the book. She has a pretty strong self esteem so the messages aren't so much self affirming as obvious.

For young kids who do need a boost, ABC I Like Me! is charming and not overly saccharine. For fans of Nancy Carlson's books, it can be skipped for books with more plot.
