From the author's conclusion:
"The claim is made by Justice Douglas that 'The First Amendment teaches that a government neutral in the field of religion better serves all religious interests.' This belies the evidence of United States history and misrepresents the intent of the Framers of the First Amendment. No state has ever achieved a total separation of government and religion, for this is a purely theoretical idea which can not be achieved even by coercion. Those who seek to isolate religion from government, business and education are in reality attempting to destroy religion but will only succeed in destroying our nation. There is no reason in the world why the public institutions of these United States can not maintain a relationship of cordial cooperation and benevolent accommodation. This is the true American tradition which is protected properly from abuse by the First Amendment."--p. 40.
