Notes

Preface:
"Since the very beginning of the New Testament church the question of the relationship between non-Christian Jews and Christians has been a primary concern. Today it is a matter of extensive discussion, and some of the answers proposed deviate radically from the plain teachings of the Scriptures. Years ago one of the foremost and most articulate exponents of the Christian faith in the twentieth century, Dr. J. Gresham Machen, dealt with this subject in an address at a public meeting of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in New York in 1924. Despite the decades that have passed since then, this address still speaks relevantly and forcefully today. Of course, if Machen were speaking today, he would unquestionably take account of Vatican II and of the present situation in the Protestant churches. He would also be likely to deal with the further incursions of the state since 1924 into educational matters and the reduction of the influence and freedom of Christians in this area. But his remarks have in their substance and remarkably often even in their details continued to be germane down to the present. To aid contemporary discussions we are making available again Dr. Machen's clear-headed, consistent, and definitive treatment, which is devoid of petty compromise and is thoroughly loyal to the teaching of the Bible.
The text of "Relations between Jews and Christians" has been taken from J. Gresham Machen, What is Christianity? And Other Addresses, edited by Ned Bernard Stonehouse (Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1951).
