INTRODUCTION:
This second volume of notices compiled by Lowry Ware, Ph.D., is a most welcome addition to the growing bibliography of such newspaper notices. On page 1 are two lists of members of Cedar Spring and Long Canes Associate Reformed Presbyterian churches (Abbeville County, South Carolina) who died during the difficult War period. During this period the publication of the newspaper was suspended, and the church records have not survived, either. Similar lists from other areas are included as they occurred in the newspaper. Therefore, there are notices from an earher period than the title would indicate. The first four pages are from undated clippings in the scrapbook of Rev. S. A. Agnew, housed in the McCain Library, Erskine College, Due West, South Carolina.

The remainder of this volume is compiled from notices which appeared in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian, from the beginning of its publication in 1867 through the end of 1888. Only a few issues have survived for the period between 1878 and 1884. These newspapers are available on microfilm at the McCain Library, Erskine College. There are notices are for people who lived in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Ilhnois, Missouri, and Texas. The death notices are quite important for this period, not only because of the details of the lives of the individuals including the places of birth and former residences, but because during the difficult years of reconstruction, many persons could not afford tombstones or erected only wooden markers which have not survived. Marriage notices are especially important for South Carolina, where marriage licenses were not required until 1911.
