Local notes

Early conflict with Aborigines, particularly the Narringeri tribe; wreck of brigantine Maria (1840) and murder of survivor by Aborigines.

Contains song: "The Pioneers", composed by H.S. Scarfe, and sung by the colonists in 1857, when South Australia reached her majority.

Fill, fill each sparkling glass, boys,
And drain your bumpers dry,
And listen while I sing, boys,
Of days and deeds gone by,
And while we call to mind the past - its hopes, its doubts, its fears,
Let's ne'er forget the honour due to brave old pioneers.
