Local notes

Mary Elizabeth McCombe (nee Rogasch), known as Lil (Lilly when young), was born at Gawler, South Australia on 7th August 1880 and died, aged 86, on the 17th March 1967 at Eden Hills, South Australia. She was the first of eight children of Sarah Ann (Annie) Rogasch (nee Staude) and Johann Carl (Charlie) Rogasch.

Lil commenced training as a nurse at The Adelaide Children’s Hospital in 1906 and later became a Staff Sister. She also nursed at Mareeba Hospital, Woodville, South Australia where she became the Charge-Nurse and for six months she was Acting Matron. She was also at The Queen’s Home, Rose Park, Adelaide, South Australia. In 1916 she was in Ballarat, a registered nurse, but it is not known just where and what she was doing there.

The story is based on the year (1921) that Lil's sister Dot spent with her in Hall's Creek. Lil joined the permanent staff of the A.I.M. in 1918.
